First off per the guys over at Hookem.com, there are a couple guys that didn't make it in...

DE/T Vincent Taylor, S.A. Madison - "something came up!"
OT Kent Perkins, Lake Highlands - had a family issue/emergency that prevented him & his mom from making it in! Expect a J25 visit...

RB Kyle Hicks, Arlington Martin has officially been offered!

Even the 'Cosm is quoting Hookem!

No sooner do I get the above post up, it's being reported that verbal commit No. 2 is in!!

I would have bet it was going to be Kent Perkins... BUT since he's not in Austin, I'm betting it was the guy just offered above... Hookem.com won't announce till the youngster announces himself!! More to come.

The only issue is that there's no timetable on when that announcement will be made! 2 things to think about... 1) Mack encourages the kids who've been offered to think about the offer & making the commitment on the drive and after they get home... and 2) I believe there's a NCAA rule that prohibits a high school student from committing on the spot, if I'm not correct. If not, then please correct me...

Well, the "kids can love those" all they want, but "those kids" come here
and leave. Hundreds of thousands of Texas exes seem to prefer what
we have traditionally had. And I don't see any kids turning down Mack
because he doesn't offer them a weird helmet. If that becomes an
epidemic, get back in touch.

Recruitocosm is tweeting that Cody Thomas has been invited to the next junior day. Barrett also coming to that one. Recruitocosm also tweeting that Swopes was offered. So what does this all mean?

It means that Bergeron has nice taste in handbags but needs to maybe not be so trusting and at least close it. Let's not mention leaving it laying around.

This is definitely a shift in recruiting. In the past, there would be at least 7 commits by the end of the weekend. But, I think its indicative that Mack is more willing to go after guys who aren't layups and let more elite talent take their time before pulling the trigger.

Rivals shows offers made to WRs Ricky Seals-Jones, Jake Oliver and Ra'Shaad Samples.
Also, TE Durham Smythe, S Marcell Harris, QB Swoopes, RB Hicks and OL Raulerson.

Reliability is suspect since search function did not pull all of these but a manual search included them.

Raulerson has verbally committed.

Mack says he tells all offered players to go home after Jr day and think about it until Tuesday/Weds then call if they still want to commit.

Burnt Orange Nation confirms all of those shown in my earlier post except Marcell Harris who is not listed. They also indicate offers given to RB Dontre Wilson, OL Darius James & DT Justin Manning.

I don't mind if we don't have a list of 5 or 10 players ready to verbal after their junior day. If they wait a few days and are still solid then that is probably the best time for them to make the committment. Then they can comeback for the next junior day with their parents and make it formal with a handshake.

The biggest difference that I think we are all waiting to see is how selective Mack is going to be. Is he going to have 12-15 players verballed before mid March and then just a few more the remainder of the year. Or is he going to take about 1/2 of the class now and then cherry pick the best talent down the line the remainder of the year. This is the change in recruiting philosophy we have been waiting to see.

Many players simply don't develop until late in their senior year and in years past Texas has passed on great players b/c they had already taken somebody else at the position. Texas has too big of a magnet to think that they need to take 90% of the class in February.

Yes, expect the first few commits to trickle in over the next few days, after the players have talked over the decision with parents and coaches. I think we have some good news before Friday.
But there is a new dynamic, and we aren't trying to fill the committment ship on the first day. We appear to be going after the bigger fish longer than in the past.

H-D Rider,

The more I read about Jake Oliver the more I want him with the good guys. It sounds like he has Shipley hands.

Mack has asked the kids to go home and talk it over with the family before pulling the trigger. Look for the news of commits to start to break today. I'd be shocked if we didn't have one or two by the end of the day. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't have 7 verbals by the end of the week.
