Updated: Sources say Thompson going pro

What I expected to see/read...and I'm still very disappointed. We really needed him for 1 more year until we get that 5-star true center the following year. Next year's team could have been top 2 with UNC...and w/o Thompson, I'm not sure what we do. As I thought Hamilton was gone, before Thompson, I'm not getting my hopes up for him staying.

Texas will now have one of the worst (read: unexperienced) frontcourts in college basketball. Was not unexpected, but still hurts. Good luck, TT.

Jones is staying. Harrison Barnes is staying at UNC. Even the big guy at Ohio State is staying. Those three would have been drafted ahead of him...now out of the picture.

Ugh, this also makes me sick. Hamilton is almost sure to follow. I need JGray to turn this day around.

Maybe Barnes will hire Penders as an offensive coordinator-type coach and we can go back to the Runnin' Horns because we will be loaded with 2 guards and swingmen, but very few big men.

He has the body to play post, but not the height to be a center in the NBA. He plays like a Center, but is only 6'8. In order to be a decent pro...he has to get some type of touch from the outside....and also start making FT's. 6'8 isn't so big in the league when you look at all the SG's and SF's that are 6'8+. This correlates to the above post regarding Jones, Sullinger staying...and therefore Thompson needing to go as he'd be behind these guys.

He isn't ready for the NBA yet, but I have a hard time telling him to pass up that much money in a year he is sure to be drafted high.

Besides, with the way scouting is these days, it's better to come out early than to stay and only improve a little. The NBA drafts on potential, not what you've actually done.

I'm just surprised Jordan came back this past season.

Why do threads like this always devolve into a "he's not ready yet" bitchfest? OF COURSE he's not NBA-ready yet. He's a 6'8" forward with no outside shot and he can't shoot free throws. But whether or not he's READY has jack-**** to do with it. He's going to get drafted in the Top 15 and make millions of dollars to play basketball 24-7. As a fan, I am beyond frustrated. But I certainly can't argue with the decision from his point of view...

Max - I don't think the two have to be mutually exclusive. I cannot fault the kid for making the decision and wish him the best, but I can certainly have the opinion that he is not ready and is making a mistake.

And until this changes, I will remain frustrated as a fan and hope for some sort of a change.

Isn't there going to be a rule in place that says you have to spend two years in college before being able to go pro? I thought I read/heard that a while ago. Kind of like what the NFL has now?

I don't even care anymore. If all we are ever gonna get is 1 and done players, we need someone capable of coaching them up to a much higher level than what we have now.

He will need to develop for a year or 2 but he will play in NBA down the road but right now he is not ready, I loved him at UT but I did not love his 50 percent free throw shooting, once he develops a 15 foot shot he will contribute in NBA. At least he will get good money. Good Luck Thompson. Texas will nice guards next year and that is about it. I think they can be ranked in Top 25 but it should not be very high. I would have been surprised if he stayed since I have been hearing for weeks he is NBA bound

Unfortunately the number of players who decided to stay (Perry and Sulinger especially because they are big men) boosted Tristan's stock in the draft.... everytime I heard someone announce they were foregoing the draft I would initially think "maybe the lock-out situatiion is kicking in." But apparently Tristan is not worried about that. The question is why not? What does he know? How could he possibly know?

As for why Calipari thrives with one and dones and we don't I would say it's because Calipari is a superior coach as compared to Barnes. It seems pretty obvious at this point. And now with a smal front court it could get really rough for Rick next year....

This really sucks
I was hoping that having 2 more friends coming next year would be an influence. Guess not.

Obviously, I don't want to root for anyone but the Horns, but I am ready for a new coach. Even with talent as great as KD coming through Austin, we will never be a contender in this system with this coach.

Thompson is a legit 6 foot 8 or 6 foot 9, he runs the floor well, and he plays bigger than his actual height. He flat punked the touted Oakland center in the tournament. Thompson can play in the NBA, and had he stayed, he'd not have been working on a face up game he needs in the pro game. Joseph is the one I chuckle over. But for whatever reason the truth remains: Rick Barnes has held onto exactly one kid who could have gone pro for another season in Austin (sophomore Chris Mihm). Every other kid has taken off at the merest unrealsitic sniff from the NBA (Maurice Evans, PJ Tucker, Cory Joseph, Daniel Gibson- you all feeling me?).
