Update on Claire Watkins

she came to visit earlier this fall. Appears to be having a strong senior season with several double doubles so far. She is playing with Tenn commit Cierra Burdick. Watkins mentions in this Dec. 03 story that she plans to sign in the spring.

Hope she comes to Austin.

I don't know Babhorn. We do not need another "role" player, someone who is not aggressive, someone who doesn't have the eye of the tiger. So I think we should pass and let Claire find a program that fits her.

Help me understand how she can help us and take us to the next level.

Hmm, we are obviously interpreting the various articles differently. Hard to see where you get that she will not contribute or that she is not aggressive or does not have the "eye of the tiger" whatever that means. She can certainly help the team next season with her ability to rebound and play defense as well as being an effective scorer inside. What I don't know is how well she can run the floor but none of the post players we have are speed demons either. Presumably the coaches like what they have seen from her. We will find out once she puts out her short list later in the next few months where Texas stands.

What's the deal with "role" players???

Aside from the two frosh (who should be given some time), every player right now is averaging at least 16 mins. per game...which to me indicates a pretty balanced team of equal talent.

Each member of this team right now is contributing in their own way...let it be a steal, a rebound, drawing a foul, whatever... this is a TEAM.

Who exactly are the "role" players???? Just curious.....

Thanks TXtoCO - "Good point! We have a team loaded with role players. We need some game changers. "

That's what I was trying to say. I don't think I explained myself very well. Nothing wrong with role players. We must have them. But we also need "game changers" and I think we lack this level of talent on our team.

Game changer - Raven

Work in Process Game changers - Kat, AG and Reed. I'm also going to include Lauren - there's something about her and her game. I can't quite put my finger on it but she's a quiet storm waiting to explode.

Role players - everyone else

Seriously, what is a role player? We are in serious trouble if I have to explain that one. We need some All America types. We don't have a player that will get All America consideration and without those types of players we will win our fair share of games but will have zero chance of a national championship.

Someone who is on track to finish with 1000 pts and 1000 rebounds, had the best shot put in 2009 (sixth all time in prep N.Carolina), and is doing this on a team with three other Div 1 prospects doesn't sound much like a role player to me. She does sound like a player, though.

So i guess MY whole point in this discussion was....

We have 10 players, 10 players that PLAY in every game. We don't have 2 or 3 players sitting at the end of the bench hoping for a "rout"....in which they might get to see some PT.

I'm thankful for every one of our players' "role" today. Without the wholesale subs from Coach G early in the game, who knows what would've happened??!! This team gets pumped from each other...not just from one player!!

And, who's to say that Clair couldn't contribute to that????

We need depth. I just don't think having 10 scholarship players out of an allowable 15 is a good thing . . .

And right now, we are looking at 10 players again next season with even less depth at the post. Claire seems to be a strong rebounding defensive presence who can get points inside. At any rate, we may be spinning our wheels for nothing if she decides to go elsewhere.

Earnie and Kristen will be gone??!!! (does Kristen have a redshirt year to use?...just curious) We'll have one frosh post coming in with Anne Marie Hartung, so that leaves the team one post player short of what it has now.

just another update:
here's Claire's stats so far this season:
[pre]Stat Name Season Stats
Points Per Game 12.3
Assists Per Game 3.5
Blocks Per Game 1.0
Rebounds Per Game 8.5
Steals Per Game 2.0
3pt Field Goal% 0
[/pre]

Claire sounds pretty good, esp. the rebounding stats...

We NEED players who can rebound, that is the key to our success...

Kristen DOES have another year of eligibility, I do not know if she will be "invited" to return...Earnie was not going to be "invited" back for another year, but then her warrior-like work as the season was ending last year changed everything...don't know if that will be the case with Kristen, though....but when she is on the court, no one hustles more than she does....I sure HOPE she gets to come back to finish her career with her sister!!

TexasSports show 2006/07 as NCAA medical redshirt year which would give her one more year of eligibility. Doesn't mean she would want to use it. I've appreciated her grit and energy and it would be nice to see her take the last year with Kat.

Yeah, WeR, guess you didn't notice her on the stationary bike her whole freshman year with a broken foot ???

I agree HornHonk, let her go out w/ Kat.....besides, the two of them on the floor are awesome, they can read each other's minds!!!

Kat!

Kris!

imo, she would have been more than a role player. Guess we won't know now. Good luck to her.

Duke didn't even think she would be a "role player" since they told her she wouldn't get to play. How do you offer someone a scholarship and then tell them that you will honor the offer but not let them play?

Duke basically told her that she was not good enough to be on their team.
