The last 20 minutes or so were a bit intense for my 4-year-old daughter, but she absolutely loved the scenes with Kevin and Doug. Most of the kids in the crowd seemed to enjoy it.
Some good laughs, a little tugging on the heart strings, fears and obstacles overcome in an entertaining fashion.
The animation was really good and the 3D effective without being obtrusive. The glasses themselves looked cool and I laughed out loud upon returning from the concession to see a theater full of Tom Cruise Risky Business smiles.
The Dogs were funny and distracting. I guess you have to accept alot of that tomfoolery if you are going to sit through a movie about a guy who flies his home around via helium ballons.
Disappointed that the film was so male dominated. The spirit of the narrative is driven by a female character so it seems they could have had a female youngster to embody that spirit. My 4-year old daughter notices when females are absent from the story.
To me Up is the worst of Pixar's movies, also like others have said it is milles better than anything Dreamworks can do. The 30 minutes pull at the heartstrings, the middle was slow and the end was a little of a letdown. My wife and I love Doug and the dogs best in Up.
I thought it was just a notch below Pixar's masterpieces which are:
Wall-E
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
Ratatouille
Then the second tier:
Toy Story
Incredibles
Up
A Bugs Life
The third tier (which I still think are terrific animated movies)
Monsters Inc
Cars
That said, Up is superb. I'd say Carl is Pixar best and most realized character. Wall-E, Ellen's Dory from Nemo, Paul Newman's Doc from Cars, and Tom Hanks and Joan Cusak's Woody and Jessie from Toy Story respectfully, follow close behind.
I wonder when Pixar will just do a whole movie for adults...like the first 30 mins of Up. Couldn't you just see Pixar amimating a Frank Capra movie with Jimmy Stewart? I'd love to see a prequel with Ellie and Carl before they got married or as newlyweds on a local adventure.
