Unusual computer problem - need help

For some reason, my computer won't process separate windows that open when you hit a link. For example, if I click my insert addresses button on my yahoo account, the window comes up but comes up blank and will not go any further.

Have never had this happen before and have reset everything to default settings, tried to move the computer back to a previous week, without luck.

Any suggestions as to what this problem might be?

try a different browser like firefox.

For some reason my IE will never play video that is embedded in the browser window. I just use firefox for those.

Am using IE. I have to believe that I hit a wrong button or something because it doesn't seem like a virus or adware is doing this.

crap like this is almost always a spyware/browser hijack.
clean your pc running multiple different spyware removal programs, dump IE, and use Firefox.

Sounds like what an over-zealous pop-up blocker or other ad blocker would do. Do you have one installed? I believe Win XP sp2 includes one...if you have XP, is that feature turned on? Have you been toying with the PC's hosts file?

I'm thinking you are on to something, but even after turning off the pop up blocker, the linked windows still do not open up.

I also ran a variety of virus/adware/spyware scans and all came up negative. No unusual processes running that I can see either.

I've had a similar thing happen to me before, where clicking links on a program - like for an online help page - wouldn't open up a browser window. This happened after using a trial version of Registry Mechanic and not backing up my registry beforehand. I had to uninstall/reinstall the last OS service pack to get things back to normal. I'm not saying this is your problem, but you could have a registry fault somewhere.

One other thing to try is resetting your security settings on your IE options. You may have them set too tight, which could limit your browser functionality.

Already tried the security options, going down to the "please spam/ad/infect me" level. No go there.

I haven't used a registry altering program since a February virus battle, but after I fixed it, the computer was running perfectly for the next two months.

If anyone has any ideas whatsoever, I'd appreciate it as I am totally stumped.

FIXED!!!
If anyone experiences this problem, just left click the start button, type in the following, and click OK.
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
