Unlimted Staff?

Per the Austin American Statesman, there is a new NCAA rule permitting schools to hire unlimited staff to recruit players.

What do we know about this?
The Link

Does this mean a staff of 50 if Alabama wants?

Does this mean the wealthy schools get one more advantage?

Without reading the link I wonder what type of affiliation these people can have. Does this open up the chance of former players, i.e. current and former NFL players, to recruit under the auspices of the schools program? Would this circumvent the whole what is and what isn't alumni/booster portion of the rules?

This really seems to open up a lot of grey area. And with programs such as those in the SEC and Ohio State/USC types who don't even pay heed to the grey area, this could get sordid.

As Mack explained the unlimited recruiting staff - at the moment it means unlimited staff on campus but only the coaches off campus - but unlimited number of visits, contacts and materials. This appears to be an over-reaction to constant violations of the contact rules by two conferences - B1G and SEC. So the NCAA's response is to kill all contact rules. Mack's example was one recruit asking him why Mack didn't tweet to the recruit - Mack's reply that it was against the rules left the recruit speechless as other head coaches were tweeting him.

Agree totally with Burton about getting off the LHN. Who in their right mind would intentionally limit a programs tv exposure? This was a stupid idea from day one.

Having a dedicated staff to evaluate talent and find the best guys to fill spots is a great idea and would allow the coaches to focus on the team and games instead of scouting. This is much better than looking at highlight reels and rankings.

So adding 2, 4 or 10 more staff is fine. Just spend the money, if you got it.

When does this crap stop?

I want to know when the FBS schools can add a GM who will negotiate contracts with players.

This change allowing large recruiting staffs surprises me. It favors the big programs tremendously since they are the ones that might be able to afford the added personnel. It is hard to believe the smaller programs voted in favor of it. Or maybe they didn't have a vote. The NCAA ought to just go ahead and split off the top 30 or 40 teams and have a super league. In 2011, only 22 NCAA D1 athletic departments made a profit. Admittedly, that number may have changed due to the new TV contracts.

So making 3 or 4 games invisible by putting them on the LHN is helpful in recruiting? Get out the lipstick for this pig too.

This is great. If and when Vince's pro career is definitely over we need to make room for him on our staff (which we needed to do anyway). Also special consideration for Chet Moss and Jake Raulerson when their careers are over.

PPV was fine with me. I always bought them. At least they were "available".

Bill:

Ya, this whole thing could be a great recruiting tool for the top 10 most profitable schools. After your NFL career or more likely try out, we will hire you to join our "recruiting" staff. Never more than 100 positions; free tickets to all the games, show up when you like.
