'unknown name, unknown number'

any (inexpensive) way to figure out who's calling when this appears on caller ID?

It's probably from a cell phone. Apparently they can't track those numbers yet. I had a number like that from a fax machine calling my cell phone every 6 hours or 12 hours for a few days. <--completely frustrating

well, they usually only let it ring one or two rings and hang up when I answer it or before I answer it. It's the ring in the middle of the night that wakes me up from a dead sleep that pisses me off. If somebody wants to talk to me, I don't mind getting woken up during the night, but dammit, if they wouldn't hang up.

As far as answering "who the hell is this," I have two pair of little ears that parrot every thing I say

Don't want to get that call from their teachers telling me they asked "what the hell do you want now?"

Back to the topic, is there inexpensive equipment that can trace a call made from a land-line? I guess if it turns out to be a cell phone I'm out of luck.

Caller ID DOES pick up cell phones. Sometimes its the phone system other times they can block their name/number but that usually comes up PRIVATE.

A lot of phones show up as unknown if the person is

1) Calling you back from the voicemail.

2) Calling from a large corporation who had their caller id's shielded (like my place of employement)

I'll give you three guesses who's calling you late at night and hanging up.

edited to add: Ok, I googled "spy stuff" to find that site....there is some pretty scary spy stuff out there.
