Uncle Billy's Brew Que

If you haven't been there yet, I highly recommend it.

Brian Peters is back in the brewing business and is putting out some really tasty brews over there on Barton Springs Road. The BBQ (especially the ribs) was excellent, too.

My totally unprofessional opinion was that the hefeweizen reminded me of Live Oak's style (which I really like; Uncle Billy's may be a tad better), and the IPA was one of the best I've tasted anywhere (and that's quite a list).

The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and smoky, and the side offerings are not only your usual BBQ joint beans, cole slaw, and tater salad. Their desserts are outstanding, and I'm not a big fan of after-meal sweets.

I'm most definitely looking forward to my next trip to Austin...

The food is ok - better than the green mesquite next door, however I haven't found a beer that tastes better than chewing on a old piece of oak bark (and I have tried them all).

Their brewer really needs to figure out how to put x and y together or this place is going to go the way of all the other places that have tried their luck in that spot.

The ribs are really good. The rest of the food is pretty average. I only tried the Hefeweizen and it was ok but I wouldn't go back just for it.

I went a couple of weeks back on the Friday after July 4th. There was plenty of room on the patio which I always think is a plus. I liked the beer (Hefe and the Blonde) and thought that the brisket was pretty good, sausage was ok, and sides were what they should be, sides. I also enjoyed the fact that you can order by the half-pound and it is served family style. It's not a place that I would recommend for fine dining but for a group of friends looking to go drink, eat, and socialize it suffices quite nicely.

Of course I'm not a total BBQ or beer snob.

I've been going since they brought their house beers online. Up until then the reviews from my friends had been marginal at best, and so it took their home brews to get me in the door.

They have been getting continuously better. At first their hefe was very inconsistent, the pale and amber were pretty good, and the IPA was more malty than hoppy.

They have improved greatly in both the food & house beer categories over the last 6 weeks or so. It seems they're getting things settled.

As someone else said, their deck is great and they get good bands.

Give it a shot. It's much better now. I hope they continue to improve.

I've only been once and there's a reason for that. I would hope the food's improved because it certainly couldn't get any worse than what we had.

Didn't try the ribs. Had the brisket. Never, ever, ever again. And the sides didn't do it for me either. Oh, and it's overpriced. I'll stick to the many places around town I know are good.

I actually know one of the bartenders, Justin, who also works at TX L&C. He mentioned this place to me and a buddy, but I have yet to try it out. I think I definitely will now!

I ate there last week and thought the bbq was good... especially the ribs. I liked all the sides too. We didn't catch it on a night with live music, but the large deck looks like a great place to relax, eat, and drink. I like any place that has fried pickles on the menu.

Where is this place? Must be west of Romeo's, because it sure isn't "next door" to Green Mesquite (unless I'm totally blind).

It's in the Kiss of Death location on Barton Springs. where Good Eats, some Mexican place, and some Japanese place used to be.

Not to be confused with the other Kiss of Death location where Majestic Diner, Maggie Moo's, some Mexican place, some other stuff used to be (now Wan Fu II I think).

Ate there last night.

The beer was good, I'll be back on pint night (Tuesday) when it's $2 any pint all night long. Had the Amber, Pale Ale, and IPA. The Pale Ale was probably the best. It was really good. They said once they finally get their growlers etched they will be $16 (essentially the same cost as 4 pints since pints are $4 each), but if you bring the growler back and get it refilled they will be $10. Not bad for a half gallon of beer. Although if you do the math, on pint night it would be cheaper to get 4 pints instead of a growler, they would both be 64 oz but 4 pints would be $8 - but you can take the growler home with you and you can't do that for a pint.

As to the barbecue, it wasn't anything special. Not horrible. The brisket and ribs were ok, but there's several places in town I'd rather go (including Rudy's) before going here if I was going just for the 'cue. The chicken was actually really good. The sausage was regular store bought sausage that had been smoked. The most unique thing about the dinner was the pickles - I **** you not. Thin sliced and unique. I guess that's a pretty bad indication of the quality of the meat when the pickles stand out, but oh well.

All in all, I'll go again, sitting out on the deck drinking some good beer and listening to live music (a steel guitar dominated country band) with a couple of cute girls and having some passable barbecue isn't a bad way to spend a Friday night dinner.

Great spot.

Beer is very good, $2 pints on Tues.

Better than some national chain.

The food is decent and will improve.

I dig the deck as well.

BBQ snobs need not apply, drive out of town or where it is you go.

Once you accept that there is no good barbecue within the city limits of Austin (since John Mueller was exiled to Bastrop), you can appreciate Uncle Billy's a lot more. The beer is top notch and will only get better as the brewmaster refines his recipes. The barbecue is decent. Their chicken is not bad at all. Brisket, ribs, and sausage are all mediocre. But the real jewel at this place is their smoked chicken salad. Holy crap. The standard presentation is to heap a mound of it on top of a regular greens salad, but they will make a sandwich out of it if you ask them. It's really super good, no joke.

I go to UB's for the beer. I am never disappointed. The chicken is good-- and last time I tried the pulled pork sliders they were damn good.

Either way, the house beers are the draw for me. It is great to have another brew pub in Austin.

Had a terrible experience at Uncle Billy's yesterday.

Got there at 1:10pm, ordered our barbecue, got some beers and started waiting and waiting and waiting. All the tables around was were doing the same thing. They brought out "free" chips and salsa but no other food. Some tables started getting their food around 2pm. Others got their food and had to put it immediately into to go boxes. We finally cancelled our order at 2:30 and as we were leaving the manager brought out our food. Too little, too late.

There were still lots of hungry looking people still at their tables as we left.

How hard is it to slice meat and put it on a plate?

We were there last Sunday afternoon and had a similar experience. It didn't take quite that long for the food, but it did take much longer than necessary,, especially for barbecue. I didn't really mind that much because it was a beautiful day, we were on the deck, and the Phoenixx ESB was outstanding. Also had a wonderful house brewed coffee porter.

I'm cutting this place a lot of slack because it has the potential to be about the most perfect hangout of all time. Plenty of parking, the beers are good and getting better, and the food, once we finally got it, wasn't all that bad. It's not Luling City Market, but LCM doesn't brew their own beer two blocks from Zilker Park.

Hopefully they'll get the kinks worked out soon.

it's not the best of anything, and they never ever give enough bread. but i can walk there from my place or zilker and drink decent beer under the trees, so ill keep doing that.

i do hope they fix some kinks, though..
