UK (London Area) for Business

So far the only advice I have received is "north of the river and north, central, or west for location". I was also told by one person that the Earl's Court area was a decent one to stay in but another guy told me it's a bit far out.

Unfortunately, I don't really have pricing details yet but it is on very short notice (leaving 6/9) so I'm sure they are expecting to pay a moderate amount. I'll be going around all week meeting with customers and partners so I would imagine that central & close to a station would be an ideal scenario.

Any suggestions?

I moved to London about 2 months ago. I've only ever stayed in one hotel here - the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum. Don't let the name fool you. It's a nice place...a skyscraper even. South Kensington is an upscale area which is popular with ex-pats. It is also very close to the Piccadilly Line, which means travel to and from Central London and Heathrow airport is really simple.

These days- I always stay in the South Kensington/ Gloucester Road area, but have stayed in Marble Arch, Regent Park, Holland Park- which are good areas too. If you're somewhere central- you should be able to get around without too much trouble.

There are decent hotels in Kensington- and the area has museums, park, shopping, food- and is a short tube ride to Westminster, Picadilly, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, etc.

If you're flying into Gatwick- you can take the Gatwick Express from the airport to Victoria Station- then take the tube. Google a tube map and gatwick express- and you should be able to plan ahead.

agree w/ the above posters - stay in south ken area if possible - you're close to tube stops w/ access to good tube lines, and one of the best areas for food, drinks, etc

avoid "the city" area if possible - really quiets down at night; you could stay in the mayfair area as well, but most of the decent hotels there are very expensive (well, everything's very expensive, but even more so in mayfair)

Don't know what kind of a budget you are on, but when I was in London last year I stayed at the Thistle Euston, practically adjacent to Euston Station (thus very convenient to get anywhere in central London or beyond by rail). To give you a general location, this is in north central London near Regents Park and the British Library.

It was fairly basic and the room wasn't very big, but it was impeccably clean, inexpensive and had a killer full English breakfast in the restaurant each morning. We got a deal through AA that got us 7 nights for the same price as 3-4 nights in a comparable 3-star hotel elsewhere in London.

I've lived in London for the past five months, however, havve not had too many experiences staying in hotels. We live just a bit north of the city, so the only experience I really have to go off of is when family or business associates are in town. Depending on when you are staying, you can get decent deals at the Great Eastern Hotel near Liverpool St. Station. A lot of my work associates stay at the Grainge Hotel near Tower Hill, but it is also like GBP 325/night.
