AUSTIN — Texas officials are postponing all high school athletic competition until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

The move suspends the baseball season and eliminates the regional track championships, said University Interscholastic League Executive Director Charles Breithaupt. He said UIL officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

The state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11.

The state track meet, one of the largest high school track and field competitions in the country, remains scheduled for May 13-14. But it will require shuffling the schedule significantly.

All UIL academic competitions are postponed as well.

Wow, how bad will this situation get? What about UT baseball, what about Omaha? Gasp, what if it is still going on when football season starts?
I know, I should be worried about public health and safety, not spectator sports. But I care about both.

It's not stupid. There are too many unknowns and the adverse impact of theses postponement's is negligible.

Anyone suggesting to ignore the advice of the Health officials is criminally stupid by definition.

Yes. In France and Egypt and Columbus Ohio, where they are currently rioting according to Times Online.

Note: They riot in Columbus daily apparently, it's just not reported anymore.

No, it's not stupid; instead it's Chicken Little idiocy from a bunch of emotional, limp-wristed people who are afraid of their own shadow.

If people are afraid of catching the flu (an extremely remote chance at this point), then let them stay home. After all, it's THEIR choice, isn't it -- or have we "progressed" to the point where even THAT is no longer an individual's own choice.

For the rest of us who want to take what little is left of personal choice and personal responsibility in this country, just leave us the hell alone and let us take whatever risk we feel is prudent.
