Uhhh, Offense?

I am fairly worried about the current state of our offense. I didn't believe that we would miss DJ as much as we are, apparently. I cant believe that all of our offense orginiated and went through DJ, which it apparently cannot through Dogus, Justin, AJ, etc.

I dont know what we need to do, but something on the offensive end needs to get going- and quick. Insights?

Have you seen the last two games? The offense is still very much a work in progress, but there are definitely signs of growth and better things to come.

For one, Mason has stepped up his game and has more or less assumed the mantle of No.1 point guard.

Second, Abrams is shooting (forcing) less. A.J.'s a big part of our offense--and for good reason--but this team is better if he's putting up 14 or 15 shots a game instead of 26 or 27.

That's not a knock on Abrams; to me, fewer shots for him means others have stepped up and asserted themselves.

A final bright note, and I'm reaching here because it was just one performance: Balbay turned in a solid effort Sunday. Sure, it was just Rice, but he's gotta start somewhere; he's essentially a freshman.

Gary Johnson played well. Our overall FT percentage was better, too. I think the team saw this as more of an opportunity to blow off the game and put up a respectable win against a crap opponent and get some extra rest in before UCLA.

James is still trying to do too much. As much as he has improved, his ball handling and jump shooting still aren't good enough for him to be trying to create from the perimeter. He needs to focus on getting garbage buckets and rebounding, only shooting outside if wide open.

Balbay needs to be more aggressive at attacking the basket, and Pittman needs to get more elevation when he shoots inside.

Mason is playing the best he ever has offensively, and AJ is obviously effective when he's not trying to be the go to scorer like against notre dame.

I think we showed a lot of progress with only 8 turnovers today. The offense just didn't get that many possessions due to Rice taking up the whole shot clock and getting way too many offensive boards.

I was hoping that Atchley would be a greater force offensively this season. He has comparable stats to last year and had a decent game today, but doesn't seem to be consistently involved in the offense.

I agree with gemstatejim

it's early and we're showing signs of improvement. If it's one thing Barnes' teams have shown in the past it's slow offensive cohesion early in the year with steady progress.

They will figure it out.

and I also agree that Atchley is a bit off. His stroke looks forced. He's missed some 3's BADLY.

I defenitely agree that we are a WIP. You know damn well we are going to be a hell of a lot better in March than we are now.

Balbay will be the answer at PG later on.

Mason is incredible right now, and the more confidence he gains, the better he will still get.

AJ not forcing shots is very good to see.

Damion. I dont know where his midrange and 3point game went from last year, but we need it back. I would like to see him go to the rack more as well.

I still do not think that we have a go to scorer though. Remember last year at UCLA when DJ did his thing, I dont see that happening this year. I am not sure who Barnes wants with the ball on the last play of the game. I don't know if we have that guy yet.
