Ugly and acceptable

Winning ugly is good. We've lost ugly lots of times. It's good to win ugly against a decent team. Last year's ugly win against Kansas left a bitter taste in my mouth. This win against a good WVA is much different for me.

Here's why. It wasn't a lucky win. It was hard fought, and breaks that went one way or another evened out. Sam had one of his worst day's passing. We didn't have to have superman quarterbacking to win. He's banged up. He missed many passes that he normally hits: short ones to the flats, and throwing to guys that were covered up by a defender. He was not himself. The two weeks off will help him.

The defense played well and much more disciplined, although they still committed unnecessary penalties. The biggest improvement strategy wise I saw was the first WELL DISGUISED BLITZ Texas has executed in years--literally. Its the play where it looked like our blitz was coming from the outside backer, but at the snap he backed into pass coverage while the middle LB'r blitzed hard up the middle through a gaping hole and sacked the QB on a critical play. The Blitzer was a freshman. His helmet came off :smile1: He was ecstatic, and so was I. That blitz, when executed, is virtually unstoppable.
WVU isn't a great team. But their QB played very well. We were lucky a few times with calls and their dropped passes. Their D line is the real deal, plus they have experienced LBs. They are well coached.

And by the way, we now know we have a budding stud at running back that instantly makes our offense better, providing huge help to Sam. Bijon is a home run threat while also able to make 4 yards where others get 2. He doesn't have Earl's power, but his moves are incredible, and we finally have someone who seldom is tackled by the first defender.

The Horns didn't break, they didn't lose when in the past they have done just that. I'm not proclaiming a trend. I'm not beating a drum for TH.
I am simply giving some credit where it's due. :hookem2:

Luckily for Texas, W VA apparently doesn't think it's possible to kick a FG in the 4th quarter, so two trips to the redish zone ended in 0 points.

Texas was very lucky also on the non-call on pass interference on the WV WR in the end zone. I'm a fan of letting the WR and DB duke it out fighting for the ball, but that was a clear hold from the back. This board would be livid if that had been Texas with the ball.

Still a good win. Any win this year, with little practice time so every game looks like a pick up game, is good.

Couldnt agree more on the blitz description. Also the other thread about the non call PI in the endzone. Yes he did interfere but how many times have we been on the other side of this to not get a call, a lot!!! Not sure why the WR and QB play was so bad yesterday, more so than normal. Not sure whats up with Sam but that was out of character. A hard pill to swallow is we have no WR with hands like Cosby and Shipley who simply caught anything near them. Have to admit, Eagles has had a few good games so far. Hope that trend continues. I may be in the minority here but I believe Schooler is a difference maker if we can get him healthy. Seems like we have more injuries than other teams and perhaps thats just a misinformed view.

What do our DBs & WRs do in the weight room. Virtually every team we play has people at those positions with stronger hands.

Actually twice.
Yeah DVR’D the game and ran out at 8 minutes left fourth quarter. So LHN do I can watch the ending. Sterns does some great tackling in front of him but if he’s one on one with a receiver he loses most of the time. The TCU game Dugan ran up the gut and Sterns hesitated and didn’t touch him. Sterns does not like open field contact.

The malcontents do seem to be playing with pride and fire lately, especially the defense. Our offense is suffering somewhat because Sam is playing hurt. There was a few drops on our part I think because of fighting the sun, the shadows seem to show that. But we do definitely miss DUVERNAY, who in my opinion is the best receiver we have ever had here at Texas. I see that Eagles is playing with more spit and vinegar. He probably wishes Sam was throwing the ball better.
Looks like the team is coming together and our coordinators are better also. The lack of practice because of the pandemic has been a noticeable detriment for Ash, also the racism distraction was huge.

Schooler has dropped passes so I am not sold on him yet. We need Moore to get back into form like he was in the beginning of the season. Don't know what has happened there.

Yeah, Overshown or Sweat probably defensive MVP this game.
Overshown was one of my breakout picks before the season, mostly because he was making plays at the end of last season.
What's up with Tyler Owens? He is supposed to have top end speed. And he has size.

His senior season was as good as anyone's (not even being a Biletnikoff SEMI-finalist was a joke) at UT, but I'd probably take Roy, Jordan, or Quan for the overall 4-year career.

He is starting to feel more comfortable as a linebacker. By the bowl game he and Ossai may be just deadly. Like Ossai last year, the bowl game may be Overshown’s coming out party.

I think Tyler is just waiting for a spot to open. See him on punt/kickoff coverage. He'll be making plays once he's a starter. Too much seniority back there right now.

That's a fair statement, but we underutilized DUVERNAY like we underutilized marquis goodwin. Ho-hum
Maybe DUVERNAY had to wait his turn, just for the sake of seniority, which I think is stupid.
