UCLA...

I should also say that UCLA got more home cookin' from the refs. They were trying to foul down by one and hacked the Cal player...ball went out of bounds, no foul, off Cal. That set up the game winner.

got that right. UCLA got two gifts this week, no doubt.

Mushmouthburger called it "Bruin Magic." Might involve some home cookin' from the refs.

Dear Mr. Big 12 Commissioner:

The Pac 10 has now completed your course of instruction for using referees to protect the conference's interest in seeding in the NCAA tournament.

Please make final payment to . . .

Sincerely,
Pac-10 Commissioner

Definitely 2 cheap "wins."

It sucks the refs handed these 2 to UCLA when they both should have clearly been won by Stanford and Cal. I live in Westwood and will hear about this all weekend.

On Sportscenter they just mentioned that the winning shot should've been called out of bounds for going over the backboard. Is that rule still in effect, or was ESPN wrong?

I remember seeing Larry Bird make a shot like that twice and both times the ref called the ball out of bounds and disallowed the shot. One of the times that you see on highlight clips was in a preseason game in Hartford.

Good grief... the guideline is that you let it go unless you're sure it's a violation.

In this case, the ref himself was reported on ESPN to have said just what I said. They don't get to call that one with a replay... they have to do it live.

Now, the rake and push and out-of-bounds call before that... questionable.

I agree with BIH, the zebras should have called a foul on UCLA rather than giving them the ball and the shot over the backboard was a good no-call.

Regardless, I think we will profit from both of UCLA's gifts this week as the committee isn't left scrambling looking for someone else to give the West #1 seed. Of all the teams worthy of a #1, we'd be the team furthest west.

For those of you still wondering if a shot over the backboard is illegal or not, the Pac 10 supervisor of officials confirmed it is.

I have a hard time seeing how the ref on the baseline missed the call. He's almost on the direct line made by the arc of the ball over the backboard.

Check out the vid here. You see the ref hand the ball for the inbounds pass and back up to a spot near the end of the UCLA bench. As Shipp goes up for the shot, the ref is almost exactly behind him.

They aren't saying it wasn't a violation, they are saying it's the sort of a close call that a ref shouldn't make when the game is on the line, just like the ref shouldn't call a foul with 3 seconds to go on a player who goes straight up and gets nothing but ball, and just like the ref should automatically call a foul on a team behind with a few seconds to go that pushes or slaps down on the ball to force free throws. . .

Oh, wait a minute.

For me, UCLA is becoming the new "Dook" as far as my tier of hatred. They are a very good team, but they are now beginning to win games they shouldn't.......and the officiating is a willing accomplice. As soon as they start "ugly-ing" up their team (Hurley, Parks, Dawkins) and getting praised for dirty players (Wojo, Collins, Duhon), it will be official.
