Uchi Sushi

so I hadn't gone to this place since it opened in May. I was happy with Musachino, it was happy with me. Last night, I went with a couple of friends and I was floored. First of all, the sashimi (my favorite) was exceptional. We had Toro (fatty tuna), Sake (salmon), and Hamachi Kama (yellow tail cheek) and it was all extremely good. Aparently, they get Toro daily and if it didn't come in THAT day, they dont serve it). Also, they have many original appetizers there which are imaginative and delicious. We had the "Hot Rock" which is a large REALLY hot rock on which you cook seasoned beef, the uchiceviche (a sushi/cevichi hybred that was great), and two others which were also very good.
Overall, the food is exceptional, the service is fair to good (our waiter was mediocre, but I'll chalk that up to one bad visit which will hopefully not be replicated). I have a new favorite sushi place.

Gotta agree with ya Crayon. The place is solid. Excellent sashimi and some pretty creative entrees...Wife and I checked it out last nite instead of driving way up north to Musashino. Needless to say, I will not be driving up north again...

Mikado, Musashino, or Uchi?

I really enjoy Mikado, except the actual dinner menu is kind of limited. What are the others like?

on the subject of sushi...

Mimosa Cafe is really bad. Their toro was ******* GRAY.

Service was deplorable, and there were roaches on the floor.

I'll try Uchi now, instead of the usual can't misses of Musashino and Sushi Sake.

Mikado is good as well, but I had mediocre Toro there last time I visited. Toro gets bad more quickly than most other sushi so it is very important to get it fresh every day and i dont think that is the case with Mikado. Also, the japanese tappas at uchi tasted great and were very imaginative.

Mimosa is the place that looks like a diner on barton springs, right?

yes crayon, and it is not worth the cheaper prices.

kind of like going to Florida seafood grill, instead of Trulucks, etc.

discounted raw fish is perhaps the worst idea ever. I am going to Uchi again on wednesday and I'll see if it was as good as last week.

I went again last night. All of the 'tappas' were exceptional once again as was the hot rock. The sashimi was very, very good, but not as good as last time. I'd say it was about the same quality as Musachino

ah, crayon makes good on his word to update us. good works for uchi, i see, how do the prices stack up in comparison to the other sushi places?

Its about the same as musachino and kenichi, more than the other places in town. But the tappas are really worth the trip. Also, they serve sake in chilled bamboos and thats just cool. I dont think i have ever found really good sushi at a cheap price. I think the wholesale cost is just too high for the highest grade of sushi to sell it cheaply.

-oh, and I know Kenichi sucks, so no one needs to post that. Except for that yellow-tail collar thing. But their fish sucks. And their kobe beef isn't kobe.

I went again last night. I think I might be hopelessly addicted. It was as good as the first time. This is easily the best sushi place in austin. Try the Crudo, hama-chili, hot rock, and uchicevichi in addition to whatever you normally order at a sushi place. You'll thank me later.
