Ubuntu and Wireless networks

I have two PCs on Windows that do fine with my router (2Wire HomePortal 100HG).

I just put Ubuntu on a third PC. It works fine on wireless networks that require no password/encription key. I can't get it to work on my router (which does, btw, require an encription key)

Don't know if this helps, but the encription key is 10-digits.

Not sure I can tell you if it is WEP of whatever, but I tried all 4 options Ubunt gave, and none worked.

I want to join the revolution against windows, but if I cant access the internet, I can't join!

If it's 10 characters then it could be a 64-bit WEP key. If that's the case then you should absolutely upgrade your wireless network to WPA AES encryption ASAP.

Check your working connections to see what settings your using. Is it static wep? 64 or 128 bit? Are you using WPA(wifi protected access)? What is your data encryption method? TKIP or AES ?

Here is my best guess without much info.
You are using WPA(pre share) with TKIP encryption. Important to know that your password is case sensative. Try that. Wireless connection is not platform (operating system) specific. So it should work.

I haven't used it, but Linux Mint seems to get really high marks for general ease of use. It is an Ubuntu variant and normally top 5 on distrowatch.com. It may have a simpler wireless interface.

I use Puppy Linux and XP in my house and am thinking about loading Mint on one of my machines to give it a try.

Was the pre Ubuntu third PC able to connect to the router?

What version of Ubuntu?

I found at least on case where 8.04 was wackadoodle. Link

I find it much easier to do networking in Linux by manually editing configuration files.

If you want to try to do it manually as well, then install wpasupplicant if you haven't already. Then edit /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, following the examples in /usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/examples/. Here's wep.conf from that directory:
