Horns will be playing two games in Miami, starting with Central Michigan Monday and continuing with the winner of the Quinnipiac and Miami game. I am, of course, assuming that the Horns will dispatch the Chippewas of Central Michigan Monday. Horns should win these next two games before returning home for two home games prior to the start of league play vs A&M on 01/09/10.

The Chippewas of Central Michigan (CMU) are coming off an 88-60 win over Howard that improves their record to 3-7. Their most notable win was an 84-75 win at home over then #25 Louisville. Texas will bring a 7-3 record, including a two game winning streak, into this game. This is the first meeting between the two teams. Coach G played for Chippewas’ head coach Sue Guevara who was an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State during 1981-1985 when Coach G played there.CMU has 15 players on their roster although Sarah Huff, a 6-3 Jr. F transfer from Marist, is sitting this season out. Britni Houghton (#12, 5-11 Sr. G/F) was 2nd team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) last season while Kaihla Szunko (#34, 6-1 Jr. F) led the league in rebounding. Brandie Baker (#33, 6-0 Soph. G/F) was named the MAC Freshman of the Year last season while starting 31 of 31 games. Unfortunately for UMC, a preseason injury has sidelined her for the season. Eight of the available 13 have played in all ten games. Those eight are all averaging at least 14 mpg. Two others are averaging double digit minutes when they play.

Three players have started all ten games for the Chippewas this season: Shonda Long (#3, 5-9 Jr. G); Houghton and Szunko. Five others have taken turns starting at the other two spots. Kendra Holman(#14, 5-4 Sr. G) has started the last three games while Laura Baker(#31, 6-1 Jr. F) has joined the starting lineup the last two games. Long and Houghton lead the team in scoring at 15.3 and 14.0 ppg, respectively. Szunko is the leading rebounder with 8.6 rpg. Overall, they are weak rebounding the ball as they rank 323 of 332 in rebounding margin with a negative 9.6 margin. While the Chippewas don’t block a lot of shots due to their lack of height, they do steal the ball frequently, averaging 11.6 spg. That ranks 23rd nationally. Long, Houghton and Szunko are the primary offensive threats with the three having taken almost half of the shots, 300 of 605. Long (33-81, 40.7%), Holman (9-30, 30%), Jalisa Olive(#5, 5-4 Fr. G;12-40, 30%), and Stefanie Mauk (#22, 5-10 Fr. G; 13-51, 25.5%) are the ones most likely to take a shot behind the arc. Stefanie’s twin, Rachel (#2, 5-10 Fr. G), is shooting the 3 a bit better at 28.6% but has only taken 14 3s.

The Horns are led by Brit off the bench with 14.5 ppg. Kat is second at 12.3 ppg. She leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 rpg. Ashley is second in boards with 6.7 rpg. Ashley leads a blocking parade with 3.2 bpg. The Horns’ 6.5 bpg is sixth nationally. FYI, Baylor with Griner in the middle, tops the nation with 9.4 bpg. Horns are pretty balanced offensively as four players have taken between 106 and 80 shots this season. Look for Erika (19-59,32.2%), Kat (20-40,50.0%), and Brit (10-33,30.3%) to be the primary deep ball threats against CMU’s 219th ranked 3pt defense.

Probable starting lineups:
[pre] Texas CMU

Erika Long
Kat Houghton
Ashleigh Holman
Ashley Szunko
Earnie Baker [/pre]

I would expect Texas to dominate the game, especially inside with Ashley, Cokie and Kristen enjoying a significant height advantage. With the expected rebounding edge, our perimeter players should be running all game long. Szundo will give the Horns problems inside. She’s an aggressive rebounder. The problem for the Chippewas is that she has fouled out of 3 of 10 games so far. If she stays in the game, she will create some problems for the Texas post players. Forty four percent of the FGs attempted by CMU are 3s. Horns will have to be very much aware of this and lock down the perimeter, especially looking for Long. CMU has played well at times, so Texas can’t afford to take this game for granted. The Chippewas took down Louisville (#25 at the time) and came close against then #17 DePaul. Could be a trap game but I look for the Horns to handle the Chippewas and give Coach G a win against her former coach. Look for Ashley to jump into the top five in all time soph blocks. She is two behind current #5 Jaime Bailey who totaled 34 blocks from 1995-96.

Game time is 2 pm CST. KVET 1300 AM will carry the game with Craig Way and Carol Ross on the mikes.

From Texassports.com, their game preview.

From the Miami sports site,a short previewof the tournament. You have to scroll about half way down the page to get to the story. Good chance that Texas will play Miami in the first game Tuesday for the championship since Miami will play in the first game, regardless due to Miami FB playing in the evening that day.

From Quinnipiac, their story on the tournament. They have a short scouting report on the other teams: Miami, Texas, and Central Michigan. The writer lumped the Texas report in the same paragraph as the Miami one. Almost missed it.

AG back, w/ Kristen...

Good rebounding....Kat at the line, she's 14 of 18 for the season

Grrrrrr....trap didn't work again, they get an easy lay-up...

I hate the press when it doesn't work...
