I'd expect this game to be a bigger test than Rice (obviously) or Arkansas. This team ended the year ranked #15 and they return almost everyone. Moreover, the Cajuns are very well-coached. Billy Napier made the short list of quite a few programs searching for a coach during the off-season, and reportedly turned down at least one offer. They return almost all starters from a Sun Belt champion team. They also have utilized the portal with incoming transfers from Texas A&M (RB Jacob Kibodi), TCU (WR John Stephens Jr.), ULM (OL T.J. Fiailoa) and Nebraska (OL Matthew Anderson).

The Cajuns on offense:

They've got an experienced QB and a pretty good OL. QB Levi Lewis is a 5th year player and is 24-4 as a starter with 54 career TDs to 14 INTs. The Cajuns' OL was among the best in the nation in pass protection and was fifth in tackles for loss allowed. All five starters and most of the key backups return around all-stars Max Mitchell at tackle and O’Cyrus Torrence at guard. So up front, it's their strength vs our strength. There should be some serious smash mouth football in the trenches when we're on D. As good as their O line is, our D line is better. Still, it will be a solid early test of just how good our D front really is. Our Edge guys need to get at Levi Lewis while keeping contain, as he's also a pretty fair runner (5 rushing TDs). Our interior DTs need to show their Guards and Center what it means to play against a Texas D front!!! U. La. likes tall receivers. 6'3" Kyren Lacy led team with 28 catches for 364 yards and four scores, and 6'3" Jalen Williams made even more deep plays and scored four times. Adding another big body is 6'2" Peter LeBlanc*, who finished third with 23 catches.

*are there any posters on this board who don't know at least one LeBlanc from Louisiana...?

The Cajuns on defense:

They've got a rep for a good pass defense. The Cajuns allowed just 355 yards and 22 points per game. The pass D gave up just 171 yards per game and picked off 16 throws. Up front, Jake Majors will have an early test against big all-conference NT Tayland Humphrey 6'5" 333 lbs. Humphrey is joined by all conference Zi'Yon Hill 283 lbs up front on the D Line. Hill is quick and a good pass rusher, and finished third on the team behind 2 LBs. Their secondary looks pretty stout as well. All-star safety Bralen Trahan intercepted four passes, corners Eric Garror and Mekhi Garner each came up with three, and they can all tackle. LBs Lonenzo McCaskill and Ferrod Gardner aren't big, but they're fast and are the top two tacklers. Gardner is great at getting in the backfield – he’s the team’s best pass rusher – from his spot on the inside, and Chauncey Manac is like a hybrid pass rusher on the outside. Our pass blocking will get an early test.
"Louisiana ranked second nationally in pass efficiency D and held seven of 11 opponents below 200 passing yards."

I'd expect us to try to establish the run and work a lot of play action passes. Bijan and the blocking may carry the day, as Card or Casey will face one of the better pass defenses we'll see all year. Control the ball, wear out their defense--especially big 333lb NT Humphrey , and keep their D on the field and their O off the field. Humphrey and Hill sound good, but they don't have the sort of big DT depth we do--330lb+ guys wear out fast and need lots of rest. Look out if Card/Casey are finding angry Cajuns in their faces 2-3 seconds after the snap.

I expect to win. Bijan runs for 150+ and our outstanding D front beats their good O front. We'd better block at least so-so, or better, up front on O though...

Oh yeah, we will have no early season hot weather advantage against this bunch. If anything, it's the opposite. Ever been in South Louisiana in late Summer?

I actually have a different take.
Their ranking last year borders upon criminal.
I love Napier, I’m really happy they are doing well, I attended a Mardi Gras ball in the Super Dome with Hall and Oats as the entertainment with a Leblanc , but they just don’t have the test against Power 5 schools and they caught Iowa ST sleeping.
I don’t see that happening here.
But I said the same right before Maryland part 2.

Thanks Chop.
This team is not overrated or overhyped.
...Disciplined, well coached. talented, experienced, and plays hard.
Will be a tough test and we should be very happy if we come out 1-0.

Cue the "We're doomed!" In 3,2,1......

Yes, and please I love this group because of intelligent debate, so please …I do respect your opinions Rain- but who were they playing? LA Monroe?
I hope for all of our sakes, we don’t come back here and you all get to say I told you to me, but I don’t see it.
The UT D will be good, and IT offense will sputter until the second half.
Ark will definitely be tougher than this highly ranked team.

Frankly, I think U. of La. will be a tougher test than Arkansas, but we'll still beat them. Our D front will dominate (either that, or I've had too much orange koolaid). I think Bijan will both move the chains, and have big plays. He was underutilized by the Tom Herman O. Their interior OL will be stuffed by our 1st and 2nd team interior DTs. I also suspect our WR corps does not actually suck, it's just that Sark and Co. have been used to dealing with 2 deep A and A+ WRs (and OLs). We know Moore is good. Whitt, Omiere, Washington, etc. have the raw talent base they've got to put it together. We will see our much-maligned WRs go against a very competent D-backfield; so we'll know more about that real soon.

Big matchups - Our C Jake Majors vs. their NT Tayland Humphrey; our edge rushers vs. their OTs; our WR vs their CBs.

Yeah. Somewhere deep inside my psyche, there are early season nightmares involving teams like Stanford, NC State, BYU, Maryland, etc. This U. of La. team is right up that alley--actually a bit better than those teams were, talent and coaching wise.

To a certain long-missed poster who hit the Hook 'em Horns hand to like the above-quoted post, here's a hit with you in mind:

IMO Returning senior leadership can not be overestimated in college football. Neither can continuity in the coaching staff

So this game concerns me because we have the polar opposite.

sark could be 5x the coach Herman was but doesn’t mean he has this game in the bag.

As I have previously stated about ULaLa - UT better take them seriously and I think they will.

I suspect the Horns will be in a dog fight with the Cajuns the whole game. Horns have superior talent but this is a new O & D in the opener. The Horns may struggle early on but I believe they will win but the score will be close.

Our OL has to pick up their blitzing LBs--they blitz a lot. As stated above, Majors has to hold his own (or close to it) against that beastly NT, same with the other OL and their matchups. If we give Hudson or Casey adequate time to throw, we'll be ok. Our WRs may not be what Sark's used to, but they're all right. Bijan may carry the day, but we've got to establish a decent passing game so the Cajuns can't be allowed to stack the line and go one-dimensional against our running game. Not even Bijan can overcome that.

NT Tayland Humphrey

Ok, this guy turns out to be a bigger BAMF than I had first realized. Jake Majors, and Offensive Guards--eat your Wheaties on game day and be loaded for bear.

The first video below proclaims that Humphrey was the (247) #1 DT in the Nation, and also the (247) #1 Junior College player in the Nation. He's from Klein Oak high school, and went to Hutchison KS CC, and FIU, before U. of Louisiana. Note: the 2nd link below (also 247)--"Tayland Humphrey, FIU, Defensive Line" has Humphrey as the #4 DT in the Nation, #9 overall player in the Nation, and #3 player in Texas at any position. Humphrey was offered by Alabama, Oklahoma, and a bunch of others. Looks like an academics issue (he went to JC first...).

"Humphrey – a product of Klein Oak High in Spring, Texas, not far from Houston – had to go here and there before making his way to UL. His first stop was at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where he had 62 total tackles including 12.5 for loss with 2.5 sacks in 22 games over two seasons. "Then it was on to the Miami area of Florida, where during a 15-tackle 2018 season at FIU he appeared in 12 games while starting eight of them."

“Tayland Humphrey brings something a little bit different,” Cajuns head coach Billy Napier said. “We know what he can be.”

Humphrey would probably start at any Big 12 school not named The University of Texas (and he'd start here most years--it's just we're loaded at interior DT now). Early round NFL potential in this one.

This game is worrisome. Louisiana is a much better team than I thought and with us having a new coach, new QB and schemes on both O and D, it could be ugly. However, I believe this will be a close game and I'm giving the nod to the Horns for the win, but still could be a close finish. I hope Sark and Co. have the guys ready.

Block + tackle = win.

If Humphrey, Hill, and their LBs are practically camping out in our backfield, we'll be lucky to get through the game without a loss.

If their D front and LBs are kicking our a$$ up front, then find ways to get Bijan isolated in space (little passes to the flats, etc.). Heck, do that a lot anyways...

I think our D puts massive pressure on their O and we put the Horns offense in good position due to defense and special teams. Short quick passes can diffuse blitzes. Watch Bijan break 3 long plays for TD’s. 21–10 is the worse case I see.

Pass to Bijan and JWhit or Moore quickly. Simple.

If our OL holds up, I think we'll win by a pretty fair margin. If not, look for a low scoring game. I still think we win, even if we don't block well--could be a squeaker. I think our D keeps them in check. Fortunately, we have a good kicker--often the deciding factor in low scoring games.

not all, but feels like some are over estimating our abilities (hope springs eternal) and underestimating a team that is returning a lot of starters and won a lot of games. They will come in confident and give us all we want for game 1. Based on what i am reading regarding QB and WR play, I would give the points.

If indeed the coonasses show up blitz happy, I expect to see a lot of Roschon because he is far more knowledgeable in reading the defense and picking up the blitz. That NT is 6'5" and unless we handle him, we could see a lot of forward passes landing behind the QB - may look like a volleyball game broke out.
