U-Haul, Ryder, Budget, Enterprise, Penske? Help!

Mrs. R. and I will be moving back to Houston from Sacramento in a month or so and besides the companies I listed above, are there any others anyone would recommend? So far, U-Haul has been the least expensive, but I have heard some really bad stories about the condition of their trucks - to the point where safety becomes an issue. I actually saw one of their 15ft. trucks going down the highway today and the frame was bent right behind the cab, so it was V-shaped, meaning, everything in the cargo area would be slid forward, and the driver would be against the back of the cab! It was NOT subtle, either! Why would someone rent that? We need at least a 17ft. truck with a car dolly and so far U-Haul is right at $1700. Anyway, recommendations would be much appreciated. Thank you!

1700 bucks to move your stuff. Damn!
I would call local movers because they could probably match or beat that price.

Oh Sorry, I have rented a Uhaul and the guy from there got pissed because when you check it out, you have to report any issues you see before leaving the location. They give you this small area to write. So I write every little problem on the Uhaul. That added up to fill there small spot to write and I asked for extra paper to keep writing. Pissed them off. The truck still sucked.

I drove a penske truck 500 miles in my last move. It was a good truck, except that it ate gasoline...try to get a diesel truck if you can -- the fuel is cheaper.

U-Haul trucks seem to be thousands of years old.

I would check into all of them (sounds like you have) but Uhaul is notorious for breaking down. You know, they have been selling a bunch of their older trucks and getting new ones though so it may not be bad if you make sure and get it from a big place that has plenty of them on their lot. This way when they bring a hunk of crap out you can say, "Nope, how about that nice one over there?"

You pretty much named all the big ones though. Let me know if you need someone to unload it for you when you get to Houston. I know a real good company over there.

Just reading the word U-Haul makes me angry. I hope they burn with the intensity of 1000 suns.
