Last time these two teams met, they played a thrilling two overtime game that ended with Texas pulling out a 95-90 win. Entering that game, Texas was 0-2 and Tech was at 1-1. Since, Texas has won 3 of four games to go to 4-3 while Tech has lost an additional four games to slide to 1-6. Texas will be looking to sweep this series for the first time since the spring of 2003. Texas will be ranked 17th in the AP poll and 23rd in the ESPN poll while Tech is unranked.

Ashlee Roberson (#31, 5-11 Sr. F) and Jordan Murphree (#13, 6-0 Sr. G) lead the Lady Raiders in Big 12 play with 14.9 and 13.0 ppg, respectively. They are the only Lady Raiders in double digit scoring. Kierra Mallard (#20, 6-3 Soph. C/F) adds 9.0 ppg. Those three, along with Monique Smalls (#23, 5-6 Fr. G) have started all seven Big 12 games. Tilmila Martin (#14, 5-6 Sr. G) had started the first six conference games before Chynna Brown (#00, 5-8 Fr. G) replaced in game 7 vs ISU. Murphree (5-24, 20.8%), Roberson, 5-14, 35.7%), Martin (3-12, 25.0%), and Mary Bokenkamp (#24, 5-9 FR. G, 3-11, 27.3%) are the primary 3pt threats for the Lady Raiders. In fact, Bokenkamp has taken 11 3s of her 15 total shots. Mallard (26-75, 34.7%), Murhpree (32-94, 32.0%) and Roberson (44-87, 50.6%) have taken 60% of Tech’s FGs. Mallard’s 75 are almost twice as much as the Martin’s 42 attempted FGs, which rank fourth on the team. Only Martin with 14-19 FTs is making over 70% of her FTs. Her 73.7% from the FT line tops the team. Roberson’s 7.4 rpg leads the team while Mallard is second with 6.0 rpg. Smalls leads the team with 28 assists and 20 steals.

Tech’s 1-6 record, 11th in the league, is reflected in their low rankings in league offensive and defensive stats. They are 11th in the following: FG percentage Defense; 3pt FG percentage; 3pt FG percentage Defense; Assist/Turnover Ratio; and 3pt FGs made per game. They rank 12th in: Scoring Defense; Scoring Margin; FT percentage; and Rebounding Margin. Tech is 0-3 in road conference games. One area where Tech excels is in steals. They lead the league in conference play with an average of 8.9 steals per game. In the first game between the two teams, Tech had 11 steals.

Tech has 11 players that have played in conference games. 9 are averaging double digit minutes with 8 having played in all seven games. Two players, Smalls (37.1 mpg) and Roberson (33.6 mpg) are averaging over 30 minutes a game.

Texas is led by Brit (15.7 ppg), Ashleigh (13.1 ppg) and Kat (10.1 ppg). The other seven average between 9.1 and 2.0 ppg. Ashleigh (8-18, 44.4%) leads three other Horns who have taken at least 18 3s. Every player except for Ashley and Cokie has attempted at least one 3 in league play. The Horns 38.3% from BTA tops the league in conference play. Eight players have taken at least 2.9 shots per game. Brit (32-81, 39.5%) and Ashleigh (37-76, 48.7%) have taken the most FG attempts in Big 12 play. Brit has gotten to the FT line 48 times in conference play. She has made 3/4 of her attempts. Her 48 FT attempts are almost double Cokie’s 25 which ranks second in FT attempts. The team is making a decent 72.1% in league play. They have made at least 80% in the last two games, both wins, after making 69% in the overtime loss to ISU. Ashleigh is quietly having a superb year in conference play. Won’t be surprised if she is named to the All Big 12 team.

Ashley is set to break the soph. block record with her next block. She has 66 blocks which ties Ellen Bayer’s record set during the 1987-88 season. She tops the team in blocks with 23. Cokie is second with 5. Earnie and Kristen have 4 blocks each. Earnie has 11 steals in league play while Brit has 10. Four others have between 5 and 7 steals. Ashleigh leads with 21 assists while Brit has added 18. Kat and Erika have 12 assists each. Kat continues to lead the team in rebounds with a 7.3 average in league play. Six others are averaging between 3.6 and 4.7 rpg. Rebounding for the Horns is a team effort. Their 38.7 rpg ranks fourth in the league.Based on the last game, the projected starting lineups are:

[pre]Texas Texas Tech

Ashleigh Smalls
Brit Murphree
Kat Brown
Earnie Roberson
Ashley Mallard

In the last game, Murphree and Roberson had 29 pts each while Mallard added 10 pts. Meanwhile, Texas countered with five players in double figures, led by Brit with 20 and Earnie with 19. Texas bench scoring provided a significant advantage as they added 21 pts compared to Tech’s 12 pts from their bench.

Horns will be looking to sweep Tech for the first time since the 2002-03 season (01/22/03 and 03/02/03) while Tech will looking for their first win in Austin since Feb 26, 2006.

Texassports.com preview. The preview from the Tech site.

Yea, Abby Waner will be doing color for ESPNU. Game will be on KVET 1300 AM in the Austin area. XM Satellite Radio will carry the game on Ch. 231. I’m guessing that those of you who have satellite radio understand that.

Do not forget that February games are Hoops for Hungry month. Bring in canned food to every home game in February to be donated to the hungry. And we get a Texas Rewind session after the Tech game.

From Bevo’s Bargains, other specials:
It’s scout day-advance purchase will get a $5 arena ticket. Scouts get a longhorn patch.

Starting at 11 am in the concourse (admission is a game ticket), events for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Included is the UT and Me event. The first 1000 18 and under girls get a UT and Me backpack. And I’m hoping to get in to take advantage of photo opportunities with “select former and current female student athletes” as well as of various trophies, etc.
Participants in this activity can get a discounted $5 ticket by following directions listed in Bevo’s Bargains.

Texas is averaging just over 6000 attendance in league play. Wonder if there will at least that many tomorrow. Tech used to bring a bunch of people to the FEC. I don't know if that will be the case Sunday. It doesn't seem like they are drawing many to their home games. Have to wonder if they will travel.

All I know is that Ashley, Cokie, Earnie and Kristen should have it a bit easier inside. Man, that's strange!

wow! so she was suspended just since they've been here in Austin? wonder what could have caused that.

From the Lubbock AJ, game story. It has quite a bit about the Mallard situation before talking about the game. Tech is seriously undersized withouth Mallard. I hate to see this happening at the school I grew up following and that is still my second favorite after Texas.

great story from the AAS! thanks for the link babhorn. i love the balance on the team this season.

game day...HORNS UP!!

2 bad calls for Yvonne result in two quick fouls. Yvonne had all ball on Smalls. Murphree flopped on that offensive foul.

Smoking hot from behind the arc. Our bigs need to step it up. Being outscored in the paint at half 20-2! Cut down the turnovers. They've scored 17 points off our 10 turnovers. Keep up the hustle the second half. Go Horns! Let's sweep the Red Raiders!

Boy, that one male ref sure has made some awful calls the second half. Thought Coach G was gonna get T'd up a few minutes ago.

I just think that the team is playing with so much confidence. They are really becoming a cohesive unit. Proud of how they're playing right now. Keep it up ladies!

The intensity the team showed was VERY inspiring. It has been a long time since I've been so pumped to watch this team play. I really don't have words for how I felt watching this game, simply AWESOME!!!

Attendance: 6138

Very impressive on Superbowl Sunday. And the room for the Texas Rewind was full, certainly over five hundred people there to cheer on the team.

I've already made time to watch the replay of the game on ESPNU....VERY nice comments from Abby Waner throughout the whole game!!!

same here, gotta wait until after the Super Bowl, but i definitely plan on watching the game again on ESPNU.

i also want to see what happened between Yvonne and Coach Curry in the 1st half. does anybody know what happened? i don't sit all that close so it was hard to tell, but it seemed like Curry was yelling at Yvonne from the sideline.

I sit right behind the visitor benches front row. This Curry yelling at Anderson thi happend the Reed got tangled up with Barncaslte. All the refs were occupied with that and Curry went out on the court and seemed to be yelling and waving her finger at Anderson. I couldn't make out what she was yelling. Respect went out the window for Tech went I saw that.

Watching the replay, I don't think Curry was yelling at Yvonne. I think she was yelling at the refs about the Reed/Barncastle wrestling match.
