Two or three monitors on one computer

At my new job I have recently discovered the wonder that is having multiple monitors on one machine. I do GIS/mapping and having a screen dedicated to my map and additional screens to edit tables is somethng I don't know how I have lived without. I want to set up my home system this way too.

At work, we have video cards with multiple outlets so its easy. I don;t really want to buy another card if I don't have to. On my home box, I have the video outlet that came on the box sitting vacant and my current monitor is running on my aftermarket graphics card. Is it possible to plug in to the open jack and extend my screen capabilities, or do I need another aftermarket card?

Any info, tips, advice is appreciated.

In my experience with setting up dual/tri monitor setups, you will need to buy another video card.

The problem you face with having the onboard video and your aftermarket card is that most likely they are both AGP video cards. As far as I know, you cannot use but one AGP card at a time.

Do some google searches for dual monitors and whichever Operating System you use.
