I had a feeling that the delay in announcing Roberts' signing had to do with the possibility of the wait on an additional signee. Both look to be additions at need positions. Congrats to them both!
There hasn't been any mention of the Canadian twins with respect to the staffing change, so no way to tell if they're still on board, or if they are also re-opening their recruiting. But there was some previous commentary that they may actually be a part of the 2014 class instead. As far as the the roster goes for 2013, since we don't have current juniors, we should be at exactly 15 if I've calculated correctly. That includes the two JUCO transfers but does not include the twins. And of course that's assuming all players use their full eligibility, which is sometimes hard to predict when you take injuries into account. I guess if any top recruits for 2013 are interested in the Horns (perhaps one of those who re-opened recruiting?), we might find a way to make it work. But honestly, we've got a great team and full roster in place, and for all intents and purposes we should pretty much be done for the next couple of years. And I think we have all the pieces in place for a championship run in 2013. The big recruiting year for us is 2014, when we should have at least 6 openings to fill. The big Texas prizes are Turner and Caldwell, both top 8 national recruits, and I really (really) hope we get both. At this point I'm feeling very good about our chances of making that happen.
Attrition is tough to predict, especially when a new coaching staff comes on board. When Coach G came on board, Rachel Rentschler transferred after one season. Nikqy Hughes transferred, as well.
From the current roster, we need to keep in mind that:
- Ronisha Major: there appeared to be some issues that resulted in her being suspended a few games, including the very first game of the season against Stanford. Her minutes played in games were limited Iperhaps due to effort in practice?), but she showed she has a lot of ability.
- Shanice McKoy: Took a medical redshirt this season due to her injury last summer. She's from Canada, so one never knows the effect being so far from home has on a young player.
- Tiffany Moore: Her severe allergy illness basically robbed her of her sophomore season; wasn't enrolled last Fall, and although she played in a few games this Spring, she couldn't travel with the team on flights.
- Kala Brewer: Is probably well ahead academically of her upcoming "junior" classification due to early college classes while in high school and enrolling early at South Carolina.
So, we'll see if there is upcoming attrition as the Spring semester is over in a couple of weeks.
I think the twins are 2014. They are 16 and a half, being born on 12/1995. They will be going to a Florida HS, iirc from an article I read this spring. Course, can't find it now. They might even be 2015.
Sounds like a good pickup for the Horns-a wing player with height. Shot 47% (150-317) from the field; 43% (48-111) from BTA; and 82% (65-79) from the FT line in 27 games. stats
