I would be working in the northwest suburbs. i'm more interested in the married with kids perspective. thanks in advance. oh yeah, the position is big step up in my career but i'd be leaving austin. Thiss is a very difficult decision to make.

Can't say I have ever lived there, but I have spent time there for work.

People there are weird and it get MF'ing cold. Not my bag baby.

Good luck with your decision.

I was on a conference call with US Bank last winter. (They're HQed in Minneapolis.)

They were telling me how the low the previous night was -21. No thanks there, eskimo.

However, I've heard it's pretty nice in the summer. It's something like 80 degrees with lots of parks, lakes, and trees. You just pay for it with a six month winter that's cold as balls.

I made a March trip there for work a couple of years ago. Got there Sunday, and it was a beautiful day. Not too cold (40s), sunny...I checked out the U of Minn campus, downtown, etc. and had a good time.

Overnight, a foot of snow fell. It was so bad that half the people we were there to meet didn't show up to work until 10:30.

I don't know if I could put up with that from October-April.

The upside is it's a good place to raise a family. Literally thousands of lakes, casual family resorts, boating, fishing, hunting etc. Summers are very pleasant although the mosquitoes can get thick.

The downside, as has been pointed out, is that the winters are brutal. Those arctic cold fronts barrel out of Canada and sweep across the state with regularity all winter long. Temps well below 0Fand wind chill temps below -30F are common. Frequently tons of snow, but no slopes of any significance. Take up ice fishing and you'll have something to do for months every year.

Monthly Avg High and Low Temps While you're at this link, turn on the record lows, too. Literally off the chart for five months.

I was on a company trip to help our operation in Eagan with a proposal in January. The day I checked out of the hotel to come back it was 3 degrees. The lady at the front desk at the hotel told me "At least be glad you're leaving before it gets cold." That convinced me that I don't ever want to live in Minnesota - the next day, it was reported as -17.

Do you like cold weather?

I don't like cold weather but it's tolerable. I lived in Chicago for a couple of years back in the mid-90's. I froze my nuts though. I'll just embrace the cold weather....I'll buy some cross country skis, a snow mobile, and an ice fishing shack.
