TW Wireless Internet

I have no idea if this is the place to post this, but I feel like I need some local help rather than posting this on some random tech site.

Recently, our RoadRunner wireless internet has gotten so slow, it is almost to the point where its unuseable. The speed fluxuates constantly causing pages to ultimately never even load.

It hasnt always been like this. And no, its not from spyware or adware. Also, I have a different computer hooked directly into the router with an ethernet cable and it works perfectly fine. Its just the wireless internet that is lacking speed.

Does anyone else have this issue? Would calling Time Warner to come out and look at my connection help at all? Or can someone more tech savvy guide me through this?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a cable modem and router as separate devices or are they combined into one? If your internet speed is fine when your computer is wired directly to your router, then I doubt it has anything to do with roadrunner per se. If the problem only occurs with wireless devices, then it must be something in the router configuration or something like that. If that's the case, you might need to contact the support group for your router's manufacturer. My guess is that if you called up Time Warner and they established that everything is fine if your device is wired to the router, then they're going to send you to the router manufacturer anyway. Of course, without more details it's hard to make a guess here how to proceed.

I have a NetGear router and a Road Runner modem... So yeah, they are separate. And that was my main concern if I called them. Id probably just get the run around and end up being forwarded back and forth between router tech support and modem tech support.

However, I think my warranty which included free tech support is over. So if I call Netgear, I will likely get told to buy a new warranty just so I can have them tell me theres nothing they can do.

Just so people are aware, it hasnt always been like this. Just a few months ago my wireless speed was fine.. So something within the past few months happened to make it go so slow..

If anyone has any suggestions, please shoot them this way!!!

I suppose there might be something that is causing interference or something. Do you have a new phone system by chance? Some types of cordless phones could interfere with wireless networks, but the newer technology is on a different frequency so the problem is avoided. I suspect something related to the configuration of the router or your computer(s) might have changed. I found this link which might offer some ideas on the slowdown.

Perhaps your neighbor is stealing bandwidth from you and is streaming porn 24x7

Seriously though, it might be worth it to scout around Netgear's support web site to see if there's any information about problems like what you are experiencing. Perhaps there's a firmware update that you can install that could take care of it. Most router manufacturers provide updated firmware from time to time to fix different types of problems.

If net gear makes you pay to help reconfigure/fix their hardware - leave them and let them know how you will make sure everyone you know will never use another of theor products. That said, I had the same problem a few months ago and, yes, TW said call linksys. Linksys walked me through the reconfigure process and everything was fine. I have had the linksys router for three years. Point is, call netgear and go from there.

I have TW in Austin, and there are a couple things to do.

First, try this website:The Link
It will give you the "speed" of your internet, and compare it to what cable/dsl/etc should be. This will help you to see if your internet is really slow.

It would probably be helpful to connect your computer directly to your modem to make sure it isn't the router. If the speed is good, try it through the wireless router, and you can tell if it is the routers fault.

You can always call TW. I had a problem with my internet slowing, and they can send a signal to your modem and see if it is faulty. For me, it was, and you can just bring it in and replace it with a new one (or they can bring it to you if you are willing to wait).

Best I can think of now.

Is your wireless encrypted or have you setup MAC filtering? Could be as simple as your neighbor leeching off your wireless all the time. If it is, I'd check for any firmware updates on netgear's site for your router.
