TVs: flat screen vs regular?

I am in the market for a 27-30" TV. Brother offered his regular 27" sharp for a VERY good price. Before he brought that up i had my mind set on a flat screen. I am just a college student, I'm not ready to drop an assload of cash on HDTV and all that. My question: Is an 'off brand' flat screen 27-30" TV worth an extra 100$ more than a regular TV of the same size?

If you're "just a college student", take what you can get and be thankful it's not b&w and has a remote.

Flat screen TVs are cool, but they're still too expensive. They'll go down in a couple years. If you really want a flat screen though and can't shell out the big bucks for one, check out a brand called Go Video. My boss bought one really, really cheap off Ebay to put on his boat. So far, it's worked out great.

There was a good item in the NYTimes Magazine a few weeks ago about test that compared flat-screen vs. regular TVs. As it turns out, the difference still came down to the quality of the set: a really good regular TV will look better than an off-brand flat screen, particularly on analog TV broadcasts.

I still have the GE 25" that had been left in a house I rented as a senior in college. It still works great, and I figure if I can get another year or two out of it then I can make the jump to HDTV for less $$$.

I wouldnt do an off brand if you want it to last for more than 2 years, especially if you use it a lot, unlike on a boat. I would just buy the used TV.
