TV on the way out

I have a 50 in Toshiba DLP. It is 2 1/2 years old and currently already on its 3rd bulb, including the original. I just had it worked on in August, and I believe the bulb is already going out. The TV will not show a picture at all. I think I have a lemon. Luckily it is under warranty, so I havent had to pay for any of these repairs, but this is ridiculous, has anyone heard of a TV going through the lamps like this? I'm hoping that they cant fix it and have to replace it. After 3 repairs they are suppose to replace the unit per best buy policy, we'll see about that.

I am "shocked" that they aren't blaming your home wiring. I have never heard of problems with Toshiba, but it sounds like you are having good luck with the warranty.

Do you mind if I ask whether this is all through the standard manufaccturer's warranty or one of those store extended warranties that I never purchase. You may be the poster child for why warranties are good.

I had a Samsung DLP that had 2 light engines fail for no reason. The first time was under warranty, the second was not.

I bought the extended warranty on the TV. This is the only time I've bought one on anything, but I have to say it's worked out. The TV wont come on at all now, and last time the first appoinment I could get took nearly 3 weeks. Luckily I am going to the game Saturday and hadnt planned on watching it at home. I just had the lamp replaced the first of August, it's pretty much brand new. Very frustrating.

Definitely sounds like a lemon, sorry to hear that but glad you have the warranty.

I've had a Samsung DLP for 3+ years now and I expected the lamp to go out by now, but it hasn't. I bought the extended warranty to cover the cost of the lamp. Sure hope it goes out just BEFORE the warranty does...

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to call today and start the I want the TV replaced conversation, we'll see where that takes me. I dont want to fix it again if it is going to just break a month later.

I had a Samsung DLP with a similar problem. The bulbs kept going out very quickly. To fix it, they replaced the bulb and the part of the TV that you plug the bulb into. I don't remember what that part was called, but once they replaced it, the bulbs lasted much, much longer.

3 bulbs in 2.5 years is a lot but it is not considered a lemon since the bulb is a consumable item. There are a couple of things that can cause the bulb to go out quicker then usual.
Having the TV set to its brightest mode, on Toshiba I believe it is called sports mode. This bright mode will cause you to burn through bulbs much quicker.
Poor ventalation at the back of the set. If you have the TV in a cabinet where it does not have good room to vent in the back or don't have good clearance from the wall, the heat can shorten the life of the bulb.
Power outages or unplugging the set before it goes through its cool down can also shorten the life of the bulb.
I am not saying that you don't have an issue with your tv but I have seen these things be issues with other customers sets.
Are you able to get the menu of the TV up on the screen.

Yes the menu comes up on the TV. One thing I have noticed is the TV always seems to be slightly humming. It would be turned off for 24 hours, and it still seems to be making a slight humming noise. I told the repair guy all of this before, but he just saw the bulb was bad, and replaced it, we didnt discuss possible causes unfortunatly. I love this TV, it's pretty much the only "big" thing I've purchased for myself since I graduated from college, and especially after getting married. It was essentially my graduation present to myself.

If you are able to get the menu to come up on the TV then the bulb is not out on the TV. How is it hooked up to your cable or sat box. What happens when you try and watch a DVD are you able to get an image. Is it run straight from the cable or sat box to your receiver or is it going straight to the TV. Have you tried resetting your cable or sat box, sometimes it can help out.
