TV Game Clocks/Shot Clocks

Why do they still use a video stream of an actual clock in some games/events. I was just watching some college basketball game and some guy kept standing in front of the clocks, and the result was you couldn't see them on the TV's score/time display.

Surely the technology is there to tie game clocks into what ever system they use to display this data on the TV. It can't be that expensive.

You only see it on certain broadcasts. My guess is that facilities with older equipment may not have that technology, but that's just a guess.
