for no good reason my tv wouldn't turn on this morning... it is 13 months old..... 42" Sony LCD Grand Wega projection... the guy on the phone thinks it is probably the ballast or a power supply issue...

this is insane... a tv this new and expensive shouldn't have problems... has anyone else had issues??

I've had a Sony 57" HD projection TV and a Dell LCD for about 20 years each and hadn't had problems with either. I don't know how exactly the LCD projection screens work though. It does suck to put that much money into something and have it go out after 13 months. You'll have to update on what you find. I'd be interested in knowing what the problem was.

Bulb issue - ballast, or igniter, or blub itself. Those LCD-projection combo TV's are NOTORIOUS for that. I looked into a Panasonic projection - 46", only 51 lbs. The salesperson made claims like "10000 hours per bulb" and "they used to have bulb issues, but they're fixed now!". Since I'm not a knuckle-dragging moron (or aggy), I went and checked out reviews from AVS Forums and HDTV forums - apparently, this (and most) LCD tv's tend to have bulb issues at about 1200-2400 hours of use, regardless of their "brand". It's just the way things work - the ballast is apparently super-sensitive to dust, which is somewhat unavoidable in normal living arrangements (my grandmothers house is not normal!).

Until LCD's don't lose pixels, and LCD projections don't burn out, it's good old RPTV for me.

my trusty 27" sony trinitron that I got in the fifth grade and had been living in my garage for the past 2 years died on me two months ago. it is still sitting on my work bench awaiting a proper gravity checking errr burial.

we could really have a lot of fun bashing your wega if you get a replacement.

I love Sony products, but I have had so many issues with reliability with them. If there is a comparable alternative, I usually try to avoid Sony now. Unfortunately, IMO their TVs just look so much better than the competition.
