Turbo T-Man/Signature Food Items

It dawned on me this morning that I had not eaten at Bert's BBQ in at least six months. Well, I went for lunch and got a Turbo T-Man and, damn, it was even better than I remembered it. I highly recommend it to anyone who is in Austin and has not tried it.

Anyway, what are some of y'alls favorite restaraunt- or location-specific "Specialty Items" in Austin?

pork chop at john muellers bbq.

chile relleno at matt's el rancho.

jalepeno cheeseburger at the crown.

what did i do? did i let a 'matt's' comment hi-jack the thread? ;-)

personally, i like matt's. you either love it or you hate it. i do wonder how chuy's doesn't generate the same response.

Shady Grove has a few signature items of note:

chile cheese fries
queso trout
hippie sandwich

Texas97 - sorry for jumping on your opinion, I just dont really get the Matt's thing. So many of my friends always want to go to Matt's, which is disheartening for me as there are probably 5 places within a 4 mile radius that, IMHO, are much better.

If you like it - more power to ya! It is just not for me.

I am sure this will get me blasted but I think the BBQ at the Salt Lick is mediocre as well. So perhaps my tastes just suck....

gardner, agreed on salt lick. it is more of an 'experience' deal than good bbq. i have posted this before but the past few times i have been to the salt lick, i have noticed that the qualify of brisket goes down big time after the 2nd plate they bring. at the same time, the amount of sauce they put on increases exponentially to hide this.

personally, i like the pork ribs at the salt lick. i will have the brisket on the first 2 plates they bring but after that i won't touch it.

i really like the brisket at muellers as the best in town but his dad does better brisket at louie muellers and it is better at kreuz.

Beef ribs at Iron Works BBQ and Irish Nachos at Kerby Lane Cafe (home fries with jalapenos, chives, bacon and melted colby jack cheese on top).

Late comment on Matt's: try the Cowboy Style Chicken Fried Steak. It's the only thing I get anymore and it is awesome. It's a normal chicken fried steak topped chile con carne, cheese and onions w/ rice and beans. Fantastic.

glad to see some fellow Bert's regulars rearing their heads. when i'm having a non-Turbo day, I get the regular T-Man with fritos in the small bowl. allows you to get thru the rest of the day without a 1-hour bathroom session or a two-hour nap.

Gary and Tom have a great niche at Bert's. Solid bbq (not the best, just always good), central location, horns gear everywhere and typically a local celeb to dine with (Governor, Crenshaw, Coach Barnes, etc).

oh man, $6 chicken fried steaks at shoal creek on monday's are hard to beat.

disclaimer: a minimum of two pitchers required to validate the above statement.
