You could say that divorce papers were filed when Trump and Bannon supported different candidates in the Alabama Senate race.
Today the divorce was finalized. A new book being published quotes Bannon as stating the infamous Trump Tower meeting between the Russians and Trump Jr + Others was "treasonous" and "unpatriotic" and that there is no way that Trump wasn't aware of the meeting. I expected the usual denials from Bannon but was dismayed that Breitbart was PUSHING the book, rather than denying or relaying his side of the story. I would have believe Bannon's denials since the author of the book has a sensationalist journalism history.
Now, Trump has issued the statement with the following so I'm thinking Bannon must be standing behind the quotes. Trump even claims Bannon "partnered" on the book.
So, they've now split formally. The real question is which side will Trump's sycophants on 4Chan and r/the_donald take? They love Breitbart and Trump.
BTW- I think we now know why Trump put out the "my button is bigger than yours" tweet. It was clearly an attempt to steal the headlines from Bannon.

In a blistering statement issued by the White House, Trump said Bannon has "lost his mind."
"When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind," Trump said in a statement. "Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books."
"Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was," the president continued.
