Trip to Austraiia

So sometime around november or december my wife will be graduating with her Ph.D in biochemistry. To celebrate she wants to go to Australia for a nice long vacation (a month maybe). I love this idea but am trying to find a way to get there for a reasonable price. I just started looking, but I am seeing fares around $1800 rt from DFW. Any suggestions on ways to get lower fares? I know about kayak, orbitz, travelocity... but they seem a bit lacking for international trips.

Any ideas, experiences, helpful bits of wisdom?

Do travel agents still exist except on the web? Anyone worked with a travel agent they can recommend?

I should specify that my wife lived there for high school and we still have friends in the country, so we wouldn't be looking for vacation packages per se.

Unfortunately, you are looking at peak season, but you might still luck out

I saw some good deals for May and august on here, maybe in a
few months there will be similar deals for December?

Also, on Kayak why don't you check out the trends. I was looking at tickets to South Africa from JFK, currently the cheapest deal is 1300 bucks, but for 2 days in feb the price dipped to 1000, so you never know, its all luck I guess. I have got to a point where I am thinking screw it, its only 200 bucks...

of course you multiply that by two.. and that sucks

Travel agents do still exist.

Something you might want to try is search online for Australia travel experts. Sometimes, companies that specialize in one part of the world can get you a better deal because they buy blocks of seats on flights ahead of time. Just a thought.

Cool thanks for the suggestions. I found a australia travel agent and emailed her. we will see what comes of it. I hadn't realized this was peak season, but that makes sense. I have widened my search to late october - feb maybe that will help.

I am still open to suggestions or help.
