This is a review of our trip to San Francisco. Items are in no particular order.

1. A very beautiful city with many different avenues for enjoyment.
2. rode the BART into the city, was not complicated except trying to pay for a ticket to get onto the rail system. Have $1-$5 to pay for the ticket. BART will only give you 4.95 in change so have many small bills.
3. if you come into powell station on the BARTyou can buy a 3 day pass for $18.00 for the cable car and bus system.
4. we stayed around the union square area so riding the cable cars was a must for viewing the city. Cable cars are packed between 10am-5pm. Going to and from fishermans wharf.
5. the downtown union square area is probably not a good location for kids to have much to do. (from what we could see) they would probably want to stay around fishermans wharf area as there are attractions for them to see and do.
6. was not able to go to Alcatraz so I cannot tell you anything about it.
7. we did go to muir woods an d napa valley. Rented a car for this. You can do both in one day if you are not heavy into wines or are a passionate tree hugger.
8. did take a tour of how the wines were made.; this was very informative.
9. costs $5.00 to drive over the golden gate bridge coming into san Francisco.
10. everyone was very nice to use.
11. did not see any homeless people begging around fishermans wharf but they were around at the downtown area.
12. lots of shopping (high-end $$$$$$) around the downtown area.
13. before going you may want to go to city exployer.com not sure if this is the right www.
14. traffic is san Francisco is awful.
15. for every 10 cars we saw 7 were “foreign” and 3 were (gm-ford-chrysler-dodge)
16. Lombard street is a must to see. You can take the pwell-hyde cable car and you can stop at the top of the street for pictures.
17. go for breakfast at “mama’s” it opens at 8am. Very good. Get of cable cars at filbert street and walk towards the church. If you don’t get there at 8am wait until 915am while the crowd thins out.
18. check out the wineries web sites for tours. I did ;not see how they made mad dog 20-20 but I am sure I just missed this winery and the one that makes thunderbird.
19. never ate at the same restaurant twice and never found one that had sweet&low, they only sell equal and splenda.
20. had a little bit of trouble finding the location to return the rental car but everything worked out ok. Travel out of san Francisco was bumper to bumper for miles and miles from 4pm till 7pm same as Austin but worse.
21. don’t count on your internet service in your hotels, ours was so bad we could not get service and supposedly we had wireless.
22. the weather was beautiful.
23. AT&T park is great. Took pictures of the guys in kayaks hoping bonds would hit a home run. Took muni rail system to the ball park $3.00 round trip. Tickets are only good for 90 minutes so you cannot by your return ticket when you get to the ball park you have to wait unitl you leave the ball park. Got excellent scalper tickets because the giants and padres are both terrible.
24. cant think of anything else but if you have a question send it to me and I will try to answer

The weather was beautiful? When were you there? My wife and I were there the first of June and froze our asses off the whole time. We then went up to Napa, where the weather really was beautiful.

I live right down from the crooked part of Lombard, weather in North Beach/Russian Hill is generally nice during the day. For whatever reason, the heavy fog that used to be native to the area has lessened in the last two years.

Figured I'd tag along on this thread rather than starting a new one. Thanks for the informative stuff on San Francisco. My wife and I are going in a couple months. I've been, but been a long time(10+ years). Any other good advice when going and attractions to see besides Fishermans Warf/Alcatraz area. We are hoping to rent a car and do the Napa Valley wine tour. Any recommendations on where to go while in Napa?

Thanks.

I was in Napa last month.

Here are my rankings of the wineries I went to:

1. Stags Leap cellars - my favorite cabs
2. Rubicon - used to be Coppola, but this is only the high end stuff, not the diamond label with the Coppola name on it. beautiful place.
3. Franciscan - great meritage and chardonnay and a texan poured very very heavy for us.
4. Silver Oak - great great wine, but they had a fire in the tasting room and we were relegated to a temp bldg
5. Joseph Phelps - good wine, great view, but bland server
6. Plump Jack - good wine, stingy pours

also made it to Wente and Concannon in Livermore, both were great, FYI

Long time lurker, lifetime 'Horn fan. I saw this thread, and thought I'd put in my $.02 since the wife and I got back from northern CA last night.

-Overall, it naturally has the feel of a big, cosmopolitan city, but not as soulless as New York, and not as stuck up as L.A.
-Freakin' cold in SF, but much better in Napa.
-Alcatraz is great, especially the cell block audio tour.
-Lombard Street is cool; you don't realize how steep or crooked it is until you drive/walk up to it. Driving down it is an experience, both because of its crookedness and its saturation of tourists.
-The wife and I aren't wine connoisseurs by any stretch, and we both LOVED the Robert Mondavi tour. It's extensive, informative, and the facilitiy is really nice as well. We also did tastings at Silver Oak (yes, the temp. building sucks, but the wine does not), and Sawyer Cellars. Both tastings were great.
-If anyone ever tells you to go to the Cliff House Champagne Brunch, don't. Yes, it's unlimited champagne, but the rest of the buffet ($39) is underwhelming.
-If you're into art museums, you can go to two good ones for the price of one: the deYoung Museum and the Palace of the Legion of Honor (a cool name to boot). Admission to one gives you access to both on the same day. Not a bad deal.
-All in all, a very nice place to take a break. Lots of good places to eat, and lots to do all of the time.
