Tree Removal

I live in South Austin and have a mature live oak tree that has died in my front yard. It is about 30" in diameter and thirty feet tall. It is close to the house so I don't really want to attempt taking it down myself. Can anyone recommend a good cheap tree removal service that is bonded and insured? If they can provide full service, I might want them to plant a smaller tree in its place. How much do you think this is going to end up costing me? Thanks for any info.

It's strange; there have been several mature oak trees on my block that have died in the last couple of weeks. I think it's because the neighborhood is just over a year old and the shock of the construction has finally caught up to them. It's a damn shame.

If you have any other oaks, NOW would be the time to try to protect them. Oak wilt is a far more likely culprit than construction and it spreads like wildfire through the roots. The oak in your front yard is probably the same tree as the oak in your back yard. This is something that you need to deal with NOW if you want to save a tree.

Monterrey oaks are a good choice if you want to replace with an oak.

Never used anyone, but Asplundth (sp) has orange trucks all over the place and I see them in different states as well.

Its heavy brush pickup in my neighborhood and the city helped me out by picking up a bigass tree I cut down and hauled to the front yard.

I just had a huge cottonwood tree (we measured the circumference of the trunk base at 14 feet last night --- the diameter was about 4' one direction and 5' the other) removed the past two days. While I wasn't itching to spend the $3500 it cost to get it down, when a 30 foot limb fell just a few feet from my daughter's bedroom, we didn't have much choice. We used Davey and have been very pleased. Surprisingly, they were the cheapest bid we got. But it was a huge damn job and they were very competent. You might be able to find someone else for a smaller project. We also talked to Thompsons and Black Forest (all in the phone book) and liked both of them, but I think they were a little overwhelmed by the scope of the job. Asplundh won't do residential work. As far as oak wilt, you might check a local company called OakMD/OakRx or soemthing like that. I've heard good things about them.

Call H&H Tree Trimming - they always advertise in the Statesman in the Landscaping Services section in the classifieds. I had 2 other quotes from the big outfits in the yellow pages, and these guys charged me about half their quote. Good work too.
