Looking through the archives didn't see any recent review of tree pruning service companies in Austin. Any suggestions? Big, tall, very tall trees here.

I had a hard time getting a tree trimmer to call me back, much less actually show up at the time agreed upon.

I finally got Alfonso Tree Experts (Alfonso Vital, 699 3795), and he was awesome. Affordable and reliable the two times I've used him.

Hope you appreciate this reply. I wasted my 1000 post on this.

Here's a quick story about Nicky Bishop.
When my house was built, the developer nearly killed the big live oak in our front yard, which was an enormous asset being the only fully mature front yard tree in our entire subdivision. They nearly killed it by cutting off 1/2 the root system when they trenched for utilities and then driving equipment around the other half, compacting the soil, and finally dumping paint cans and other trash under the drip line of the tree.
Anyway, I call Nicky Bishop to prune what I see as dead limbs when we moved in and he came out and immediately recognized that the tree was very sick, refused to prune, and that saving it was out of his league and referred us to somebody else who would treat the tree.
While I know a lot more about plants and trees now, back then he could have easily just taken my money to do what I was asking him to do, and maybe killed my tree. But he didn't, and the tree is alive because of him.
Good man, that Nicky Bishop.

bozo... sounds pretty spot on to our experience with the guy. his website write up is a trip, but the man is passionate about what he does and gives pretty good pricing.

The cheap guys scare the crap out of me. Actually all of them scare the crap out of me because I don't think most of them sanitize their equipment between jobs... Thus I have seen more than one set of beautifully trimmed trees succumb to oak wilt.

They Might Be Monkeys! pruned two large oaks (a live oak and red oak) in my backyard last month, and they did a fine job. They are locally-owned and operated.

If you're talking live oaks - Feb through summer is when you're not supposed to trim b/c of oak wilt risk...in case you weren't aware. I'm seeing signs pop up in NW Hills all over the place with warnings.

I've used the Tree Clinic for almost 5 years now & have been very happy w/ the results. Clarence Biddy is our arborist & he's done a very good job helping us get our trees in shape. We've got 2 hybrid oaks in the front yard which were neglected by the original owners of the house (built in '94). But the prize is in the backyard where we a deck was built around 2 big, beautiful old live oaks that are a tremendous feature to the home.

Clarence & his team have given the oaks in front good shape & direction & have really done a fabulous job lifting the canopy of the oaks in back & making sure they'll continue to grow & be remain the focal point of the yard.

They ain't cheap, but when I consider the value that those oaks will bring when we sell the house it becomes a solid investment.
