traylon on defense?

i remember that vince was used on spot duty at safety on his team, but i saw mention that traylon played both ways at cayuga. i don't know if that means 'on occasion' or regularly and i don't know where he played on defense.

does anyone here know how he was used on defense and how much he played there?

What I heard from the recruiting "experts" at practices and stuff was that he'd play anything on defense from DE to LB to a roving safety. If it were to translate to a position in college, he could probably be an OLB in a 4-3 or a weakside ILB in a 3-4.

He's too big to play safety, and would probably only get bigger, assuming they want him at RB.

thanks, 11. that's useful information.

given his size and the footage i've seen, i'm guessing that he was also a linebacker in hs. we've had some great offensive players come from part-time or full-time linebackers. earl was a linebacker until, maybe, his senior year, and david thomas split time at frenship all over the field on offense and special teams, but was also a starter at lb. i think he earned all-state at that position.

that said, i would have guessed vince at lb, but in the playoff game i saw on tv, he came in late in the game at safety and was a wheel horse.

some don't know it, but earl came in at linebacker a few times for us. special situations. he was devastating in that role.

One of the most famous offensive players to play defense was QB Duke Carlisle playing D saving a national championship
The Link

Emmett Augustus “Duke” Carlisle III is a former American football player. The Athens, Texas native played quarterback for the Texas Longhorns from 1961-63, while starting as a senior in 1963. He also played defensive back. Carlisle's record as a UT starter was 30-2-1.

In 1963, Carlisle led Texas to a national championship. He was named Outstanding Back in the 1964 Cotton Bowl win vs. Navy, averaging 30.4 yards per completion. Earlier in the season he had a game-saving interception to preserve 7-0 win over Baylor University.

The other QB at that Cotton Bowl was some kid named Roger Staubach.

It is my understanding that we have absolutely no plans for Traylon to play anything but RB.

Seems every RB we sign someone wants to move him somewhere else.

In high school it isn't unusual for a very good player to play both on offense and defense especially when you are from a small school.
Duke made a geat defensive effort on that Baylor interception but before Dixon passed away they asked Coach Royal about it and he said that Joe (Dixon) had done the right thing and turned Elkins (the Baylor receiver in) and Duke was supposed to be there for the help. It was fortunate indeed that Coach Royal made that comment becasue all those years no one had ever thought t ask Coach Royal about it. I think I read that in Clendon's magazine a few years ago.

whoa, bill. i hope you don't that i'm looking to move traylon. absolutely am not.

i just read about the state title game recently and it was stated that traylon pulled a hamstring in warmups, and, while it was quite painful, he went on to be effective at running back (3 tds) and that he even continued his play on the defense. they didn't say where he played on defense and i was curious. also curious whether he was a full-time player both ways. that takes some stamina.

Exactly it's called keeping your best athletes on the field. And in college your level of athletes across the board are a bit more even.

no, it's not unusual even for larger schools. i mentioned david thomas. woolfforth-frenship is 4a, and they had david playing tight end - and wideout on occasion - and also starting at one of the linebacker positions. he also returned kicks for them.

when i saw vince at safety late in the one hs game i saw, i knew he was fast and very athletic. i am curious to know whether traylon is more linebacker size, speed, quickness, coverage skills, etc or more safety-like. or cb? or de? we know those positions to require somewhat different skillsets, and i am curious to know which set of skills best describes him athletically.

i realize that at small schools not enough quality players are available to always maximize a kid's value by playing him at the ideal position, but it would help me get a fix on traylon to know what he was asked to do defensively.

also did he return kicks or punts? or play up back? or play on the kicking or punting team?

so many questions!

In recent years Texas seems to have issues in the running game, where are all the Stud running backs at when you need them?

Lake what Don Trull means is that in 1963 when Baylor was deep in Texas territory in the last few seconds and Duke Carlisle was on defense and made a big interception to stop the drive and save the game. Don had thrown the pass.
