Traveling to New Zealand/South Pacific

I am looking to take a trip to New Zealand and/or the South Pacific. Any tips on finding the cheapest airfare or interesting packages? Is this something where it is best to talk to a travel agent?

Depends on how much work you want to do looking yourself.

If you want to do multipule legs of the journey, maybe a travel agent can offer you better advice. I might even be tempted to try an angency in somewhere like LA where they may have more knowledge of any special air tickets that you can get to fly around a region.

Also try places like Trailfinders, and STA, even if you are not a student they can help you out.

Depending on when you are going and whether you are interested in Australia, Qantas and AA have the Aussie Pass which gets you RT from Los Angeles to Sydney, plus 3 destinations within Australia for around $1099.

as far as air fare packages, they do wrap alot of trips to NZ with stays in Fiji. Might get a good deal thru a travel agent on airfare.

As for packages while in NZ, rent a car and just go. Lots of self drive itineraries on the web that you can research.

There are also a number of hotel/motel chain passes you can buy that might make accommodations in each town cheaper. Plus that will guarantee an available room of a certain quality. But with the exception of maybe some in Auckland, almost all hotels/motels are clean safe and nice.
