TRANSFERS?

What just happened?

Texas guard Crystal Boyd and forward Rachel Rentschler announced Wednesday that they will be transferring at the end of the semester. Neither player has decided on a new school.

Coach Gail Goestenkors, who is in Beijing with the U.S. national women’s basketball team: said: “I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to coach both Rachel and Crystal this season. I wish them only the very best in their future endeavors and playing careers.”

Boyd played two years at Texas, all in a reserve role. This season she averaged 2.8 points, 1.4 rebounds and 8.7 minutes per game.

Rentschler, as a freshman this season, played in 34 of 35 games, averaging 11.8 minutes, while averaging 2.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per contest.

Does this free up more scholarships?

Absolutely it frees up more scholarships. I guess both of these surprise me, but neither shocks me...Rachel had some pretty solid contributions for a freshman, but it's natural for someone to want more...Crystal was always lost, but she looked like she was having fun doing it, so who knows?

I'm not surprised that Crystal is transferring. She seemed to have a hard time with the new system. I had thought she would have been perfect for it. Rachel's decision is unexpected as I had thought she was doing well. Guess she thought it wasn't as good a fit as it looked from the outside.

Best wishes to two players that gave it all they had in their time here. I'll miss them. They were two of the most outgoing players on the team.

Not surprised about Crystal - very surprised about Rachel. Guess you just never know! I hope there are BIG TIME recruits on our horizon!!!

Not surprised by either one, and it may not end with them....I thought Rachael was wonderful, but I am sure she could see the handwriting on the wall with Ashley Gayle's arrival....

I understand not wanting to sit on the bench a lot, especially after you have been a go-to or a best-ever player at your High School....or even in your state.

I, too, wish them the best and hope they do well at their new schools....I will miss both of them!!

I think Rachel and Crystal are making good moves for themselves. Crystal has a lot of talent which has never been tapped here, due, of course, partly to her injuries and whatever else. She didn't get much playing time with Conradt or Coach G, and I hope she goes somewhere where she can have a couple of great years of basketball. Same with Rachel. She would really do well in a lot of programs. But her strengths don't fit well in Coach G's game. Not quite quick enough or tall enough. I can see her in a disciplined half-court style offense, some team like Iowa State.

I sometimes wonder why any player stays around who really loves to play and sees early on that the playing time isn't going to be there. I often wondered why Kaley Carey stayed so long. I admired Stephanie Thiel for getting out early, when it was clear that she wasn't on the A list for playing time.

I was actually surprised by Rachel's decision...not so much Crystal's (even though I liked her enthusiasm at times). Even though Rachel may not have the height she needed to "fit in" to Coach G's system, she really seemed to have the hustle and desire everytime she played. Although i can also see the intimidation of Ashley G's arrival.

Nevertheless...i feel they gave their all this past season, helped put passion into Coach G's style, and...good luck to the both of them!!!!

I'm glad these players are doing what they think is best for them.

Strictly my opinion, but I don't think Rachel was a good fit in GG's system. Gail wants her teams to press and trap, and Rachel seemed a step slow compared to the rest of the players. Perhaps it was conditioning, but she just seemed a bit out of place. But, we don't have much depth at PF, so here departure affects things there.

I agree that Boyd seemed to have so much potential coming out of high school. Unfortunately, injuries really set her back.

I do think that both players would have added depth for the upcoming season, but their departures do open up slots for the 2009-10 season.

Originally, it seemed like we had 3 'ships open for the next recruiting year, and with 2 senior posts departing in 2009, that seemed to be the major need. I felt pretty confident that we would try to sign 3 post players (ideally Kelsey Bone, Nikki Greene, and Cokie Reed), but when it was posted that 5'7 PG Lauren Flores of Galena Park Northshore had committed to Texas, I started thinking that perhaps a few players were going to be departing, and we'd have more than 3 'ships to award.

Well, at the moment, it looks like the 2009-10 class can be as large as five, with one slot already being taken. I recently saw a post on the ESPN board where a poster claimed they had heard from a few sources that G/F Tierra Rogers (2nd team Parade All-American as a junior) from Cali was certain to announce for Texas. Although from California, she's playing with the DFW Elite team, and is rumored to be playing her senior season somewhere in Texas. Could be nothing more than a rumor.

In all honesty, the player who I thought might transfer was Nikqy Hughes. My logic is pure speculation, but with her sister, Destini, visiting last Fall, but then signing with LSU (not sure if Texas offered her, after all), it just led me to believe that perhaps Niqky could eventually decide to join her in Baton Rouge. Had Desitini chosen Baylor or A&M, then it might have been more difficult for Niqky to consider making that change (due to intra-conference transferring rules). Plus, LSU lost like 7 seniors this season, so they probably have the room to accept a transfer or two.

That being said, I hope my "logic" isn't Niqky's logic. I love her game and think she has more upside than anyone else on the team, especially if she can fully recover from her earlier surgery.

There's always a chance that we could have some incoming transfers. Take a look at what beat-writer Maria Cornelius posted on the Lady Vols site . . .

I commented during the NCAA tournament how miserable Waner looked in the Duke system and had voiced the opinion that I wouldn't be surprised to see Waner transfer out of Duke for her senior season. I am not sure if she would want to sit out a year at this point but she seemed to love playing for GG. That would be a nice addition to the team, as would Christmas.

Rachel's decision to transfer had nothing to do with in-coming Freshman - if you know anything about her you would know she loves a challenge and works very hard at her game and loves competition! Rachel's decision was based strictly on program environment and system. (Sometimes things aren't always what they appear to be!). Rachel thoroughly loved her teammates and the University of Texas!

Yes, I can see that Coach Conradt's manner and system were very different from Coach G's. I can understand that someone recruited into by Coach Conradt's into her system might be uncomfortable with Coach G's and her system. But to make a statement like things aren't as they seem, is completely uncalled for, IMHO.

No one said things were BAD...she's transferring...hopefully good for her, hopefully good for us as well. Rachel honestly contributed more than I expected she would this year, but I really hope she'll get more playing time wherever she goes.

I HAVE heard that this year's conditioning program is NO JOKE AT ALL.

Reflecting Moooooo's concern above, I have been wondering if Niqky might transfer. I hadn't so much thought about her wanting to be with her sister (who knows?), but I've wondered why she didn't get more minutes this season. I hope that it was because she was still rehabbing from her surgery. I think she is a true talent with great energy, and that we should make the most of her abilities.

The majority of the team loves and maybe adores coach GG. Some players may not be willing to work as hard or see writingo on the wall. I wish them well. Happiness and a degree are hopefully in line for any transfers coming in or leaving.

Thank you for coming to Austin.
