Transfer Video to Computer?

Can anyone tell me how to transfer video onto the computer so that I can send it to relatives? How to make it into an mpeg or what format should be used.

Get a capture card. ATI has some good ones that aren't too expensive.

If you have a standard VCR, find a card with composite analog inputs (the normal audio/video out jacks). If you have a DVcam, you may not need a capture card at all if you have FireWire ports on your camera and your machine.

Lastly, you'll need a video editing program of some sort. iMovie is pretty good if you're Mac-inclined; if not, there are several inexpensive options for PC (or you can go full-out and buy Adobe Premiere).

A cheap option is Windows Media Encoder - a free download from Microsoft. You can use it to encode WMV clips that can achieve pretty good resolution with much smaller file sizes than MPEG or AVI.
