UTSA is a small, scrappy, athletic team. Even so, they shouldn't have been able to beat us off the dribble over and over and over again in the first half. With Brit in the second half, the tenor of the game changed quickly. Coach G said that she missed some classes, so she was suspended for the first half.
Ashley Gayle looked great in the first few minutes. She blocked at least three shots early on but picked up her second foul and sat on the bench most of the first half. Team seemed a little lost without Raven on the court. Played with more confidence when she came into the game in the second half. I liked what I saw from both freshmen, Reed and Flores. Love to see Reed and Gayle on the floor at the same time to see how things would work.
On to San Antonio to see the Horns take on UConn on Tuesday before heading back to Portland.
Really great chemistry between Brit and Fontenette in the second half. Also really liked seeing Ashley Gayle and Cokie Reed demanding the ball under the basket, and Cokie making a basket with three defenders hanging on her. Hook 'em Horns!
The bottom line is our Offense looked weak throughout and we have to get more rebounds if we want to hold our own. It was good to see the girls back on the court but we can't afford the mistakes we made tonight with any other teams. At least a couple of lazy passes that resulted in turnovers. I was however surprised at how aggresive the refs let the game get....alot of missed calls in my opinion. UTSA held their own, overall not bad for the opener but the girls looked a bit rusty.
So if Gayle missed most of the first half with Foul Trouble and Raven was suspended doesn't that tell you why they struggled a bit in the season opener?
Looks like the team is pretty deep because almost everyone played +15 minutes.
Good win for Gail and Co in the opener. Looking forward to seeing what happens against UCONN.
The way they played the second half was the way I had expected they would play all game. It wouldn't have been close if that had happened. But UTSA really played a very good game. It's a good experience for the Horns as they will face that type of pressure from UConn and various league teams, although on a higher level.
It was a poor start but a good finish. It was the first game of the season (no exhibitions) so maybe they were a bit shaky at the start. I do wish the 3pt shooting had been better overall. AG's FT shooting was a huge improvement from last season (6-9 in this game).
And she almost dunked during warmups, just missed.
