Torres Starting at Third ...

So I read thru most of the off-season that Loy had secured his spot at 3rd, apparently Torres made a late run and took over the starting role.

Talked to some parents yesterday and they confirmed it will be Torres this weekend. Seems his glove work has improved greatly, and with the log-jam at DH (Rupp, Moldenhauer, Lusson) this aleviates some of the crowding.

He made several nice plays yesterday, but threw one ball away trying to make a play on an infield hit ... no error was given.

My question is, "IF" Torres struggles to make plays in the field, will Augie have a short leash on him? My guess is yes. My #1 concern for this team is their infield play ... we simply cannot be successful with the circus in town everytime a ball is hit on the ground.

4 days ...

BH - Thanks for the info. Did you note anything else significant yesterday during the intrasquad game? Any idea who will go the mound on Friday? How did Clark and Moldenhauer look? Thanks!

My impressions:

- Jungmann looks great. Threw 5 scoreless yesterday. Big kid, nice velocity.
- Infield defense has looked solid.
- Lots of K's from our batters ... Keyes had 2 looking, Tucker struck out 3 times.
- Pitching has given up 1 run in 9 innings vs Alumi and 7 in the intersquad ... good thing, or bad sign about our hitting?
- Preston has caught both days, seems fine.
- Nobody has really stood out at the plate ... Hernandez has been making solid contact.

That's all I got for now. I'm not taking much away from the last 2 weekends, I'll see all I need to see by next Sunday.

Torres winning the job at third is huge for the lineup…because it opens up the DH spot for guys like Rupp and Moldie.

The only concern that I have is did they pencil in Torres at third for that reason alone (to stabilize the DH position) or has he in fact improved his defense enough to deserve a full-time defensive spot. Because he was beyond terrible last year in the field.

Obviously time will tell...but I am giving the staff the benefit of the doubt (as I always do)....I think it is a good move, because we can’t afford to have hitters like Rupp or Moldie or Torres not in the lineup on a regular basis.

Cant wait till Friday!!!

Garrido's been saying that this team will be focused on pitching and defense, which is what we got away from the last few seasons. I have to think that there will be a short leash on all of the infielders. If we see a bunch of silly errors, my guess as that some of the younger guys will get a shot, regardless of the DH position.
