Top-Ten surprises on the 2008 Horns' depth chart

Mack has announced the season-opening depth chart for the 2008 Horns' football team, and the news may be most remarkable for its surprises (and uncertainty) in the identity of both the starters and the backups.

Here's a list of some of the eye-openers:

(10) Co-Starters - the 2008 Horns currently have "co-starters" listed at nine (that's right, 9) of the 22 starting positions. Interestingly, 6 of those first-team co-starters are listed on defense ... while 3 of the first-team co-starters are listed on offense.

Muschamp apparently is going to wait until Game Day and then determine most of his official starting lineup on the basis of what he sees on the football field when the players are involved in live action.

(9) Sergio Kindle - here is an instance where Muschamp apparently is convinced (at least at the moment), and Kindle is listed alone as the 2008 Horns' starter at strongside LB, ahead of Kennan Robinson. For those tracking the progress of the player who arguably is the preeminent individual talent on the defensive side for the Horns, this appears to be good news.

(8) Aaron Lewis - this is one of the most intriguing "moves" on the current depth chart. Lewis actually is listed as a "co-starter" at DT with Lamarr Houston (who is listed first on the depth chart) -- which either is discouraging news regarding Houston's progress, or (and this appears to be the more likely alternative) is good news regarding Aaron's ability.

(7) Henry Melton/Aaron Lewis/Eddie Jones - seldom does the same player get mentioned twice in a top-ten list, but Aaron Lewis also is listed as a "co-starter" at DE with Henry Melton -- although Melton is listed first on the depth chart. There is nothing shocking about Lewis (who has considerable experience at DE) being listed up there with Melton, but it is interesting that: (a) Melton has held on to the starting spot, so far, and (b) that Lewis has moved past national-level blue-chipper Eddie Jones at DE.

Sergio Kindle and Eddie Jones appear to be moving in opposite directions on the season-opening depth chart for the 2008 Horns.

(6) Sam Acho & Emmanuel Acho - our opponents this Fall may be asking: "who are these guys?"

From virtually unheard-of status, both Sam Acho and Emmanuel Acho have moved up the Horns' depth chart with remarkable quickness (which happens to be a trait they both possess on the football field). Sam Acho now is the backup for Brian Orakpo at the "Quick" DE, and his younger brother, true freshman Emmanuel Acho already is the backup at weakside LB for Roddrick Muckelroy.

Watch out for the Achos.

(5) Earl Thomas & Christian Scott - who would have thought that Muschamp would "stack" these two players at "Right Safety" (as the playing position is listed on the depth chart)? This decision would appear to knock either Thomas or Scott out of the starting lineup in our secondary, and open the door for ...

(4) Blake Gideon & Nolan Brewster - this may be the biggest surprise on the season-opening depth chart. Gideon and Brewster are listed as "co-starters" at "Left Safety (as the playing position is listed on the depth chart). So, apparently, one true-freshman or the other will be in the Horns' starting defensive lineup (to help direct traffic -- both Gideon and Brewster reportedly are very perceptive players) when Texas hosts Florida Atlantic this weekend.

(3) Michael Huey - there is no real surprise here, because Huey is listed behind Cedric Dockery at RG, and that's where both of them have been playing in our Fall practice sessions. What is foreboding about this situation is that Huey, by all reports, is an unusually talented player with exceptional size (6-5, 315) and athleticism at OG ... and we arguably could use Huey in the starting lineup for the RRS vs. Oklahoma's big defensive tackles.

Surely, Mack will not wait until "after" the RRS on October 11 to move Huey into the 2008 Horns' starting lineup.

(2) Greg Smith - this guy is another big (6-4, 295) surprise on the depth chart. A senior letterman, Smith actually started out at TE for the Horns, but moved inside to help us at offensive tackle ... and now Smith, who is a devastating blocker at TE and also is a serviceable pass receiver (big target), is listed as a "co-starter" at TE with Blaine Irby. This could work out well for the Horns and our two-TEs alignment.

(1) Running Back Committee - we have five RBs (Vondrell McGee, Chris Ogbonnaya, Fozzy Whittaker, Cody Johnson and Jeremy Hills) ostensibly listed as "co-starters" on the current depth chart ...

... although Mack has Vondrell listed first, then Chris & Fozzy in the second-team slot, and then Cody and Jeremy in the third-team slot. Still, all five players are listed as co-starters, and it is interesting to think about how Cody Johnson and Jeremy Hills might be able to help the 2008 Horns, particularly if there are any lingering injury issues with Fozzy.

We'll see what happens.

At TB, I think Mack has Vondrell, Ogbonaya, and cody Johnson listed as co-starters and Fozzy as second team with Jeremy Hills as third team. I interpet it this way: Vondrell and Fozzy split the carries as the "normal" TB, Ogbonnaya comes in on obvious passing downs (eg: 3rd and 10), and Cody is the power runner who comes in on 3rd and short.

Cody also is a co-starter at FB (my guess is that he gets a lot more snaps at FB than Tiemann since he is a running/receiving threat as well as a good blocker).

One question I have is why didn't Mack list a third starting WR?

Monday's depth chart from MBTF

I'm happy. The best players are starting and "co-starting." That's what I expected. There has to be flexibility built in. I think they got it right.

I don't think Eddie Jones is surprising at all. Don't forget, he missed spring with and injury, and by all accounts, Melton looked very good. I expect Jones to be seeing the bulk of the playing time there by season's end.

I've been a fan of Aaron Lewis since seeing him take down Peterson the way he did as a freshman DE in the RRS.

That is exactly the type of physically dominating plays we need more of in that game.

I like the idea of the DE's sliding over to tackle, especially with proliferation of the spread offense and wide splits that they tend to employ. Hopefully, this will create more havoc for the Pirate and his mates, among others...

if you find things interesting and are surprised/shocked by the "official" depth chart and number of co-starters then you haven't really paid attention to Texas football the past ten years. Mack does this in order to avoid hurting feelings. Same thing every year.

i'd imagine jones will see plenty of playing time. lewis can't play at DT and DE at the same time, and melton is still a bit of a question mark until proven otherwise (though i hope he does).

I am happy to see 6 co-starters on D. I take this to be a confirmation that we will blitz and pressure so much most of our players will have to rotate to keep up the pace.

I will be most intrigued by the RB and Safety situation in the game against FAU. I, like many others, am surprised to see gideon and brewster as "co-starters". I am also excited about this. I am all about playing young players with a ton of excitement and energy, as long as they don't make dumb mistakes. This will be fun to watch.

Eddie Jones looked good in limited PT last year before getting hurt. I think his being listed well down the depth chart has more to do with uncertainty about whether he is 100% than poor execution on Eddie's part.

I'm shocked to see Ben Wells not atop the safety depth chart. There was a lot of talk that he should have burned his shirt and played last year. I know his name hasn't been brought up a lot this offseason, but I expected him to be able to beat out some true freshmen this year.

My belief is that McGee and Whittaker will be carrying a mojority of the load by the time we play OU...I like the change of pace between the two guys and we already know Vondrell can pick up a blitz and lead block if need be.

I like the way Fozi gets up and down the field...He seems more powerful than he looks. I hate to compare him to Quentin Griffen but there you go.

Thanks for the help from all corners in reviewing this topic.

As a general observation, it may be somewhat confusing to see so many (nine) listings of co-starters ... and perhaps the following categorical (using Webster's second definition of that word) analysis will help to focus the picture as the 2008 Horns take on Florida Atlantic in DKR-Memorial Stadium this Saturday.

(1) Here are our clear starters on offense:

Wide Receivers (only two listed): Jordan Shipley and Quan Cosby

RT: Kyle Hix
RG: Cedric Dockery
Center: Chris Hall
LG: Charlie Tanner
LT: Adam Ulatoski

QB: Colt McCoy

That's eight (8) clear starters on offense, including our QB and the entire offensive line.

Here are the three (3) co-starters on offense:

TE: Blaine Irby or Greg Smith
RB: Vondrell or Chris or Fozzy or Cody or Jeremy Hills
FB: Cody Johnson or Luke Tiemann [Note: This is the cleverly disguised SE position that we're not mentioning right now on the depth chart, while we wait to see what happens with Malcolm Williams this Saturday.]

(2) On defense, we have five (5) clear starters:

Quick DE: Brian Orakpo
Nose Tackle: Roy Miller
Strongside LB: Sergio Kindle
Weakside LB: Roddrick Muckelroy
Right CB: Ryan Palmer

Actually, that arguably says a lot for Orakpo, Miller, Kindle, Muck and Palmer.

Here are the six (6) co-starters on defense:

DT: Lamarr Houston or Aaron Lewis (and, interestingly, true-freshman Kheeston Randall is the third-team DT)

Power DE: Henry Melton or Aaron Lewis (with Eddie Jones on the third team)

Middle LB: Rashad Bobino or Jared Norton (Dustin Earnest on the third team)

Left CB: Deon Beasley or Chykie Brown (Aaron Williams on the third team)

Left Safety: Blake Gideon or Nolan Brewster (or Ben Wells)
Right Safety: Earl Thomas or Christian Scott

Summary: Presumably, this will get sorted out on the football field once the season starts this weekend vs. Florida Atlantic (and their silver-tongued head coach, Howard Schnellenberger).

We'll see what happens this Saturday ... and, hopefully, the starting lineup issues for the Horns will be sorted out "before" the 2008 RRS.

KC, I know you've read the Trey McLean stuff and it's flexible on through game minute. You can't nail it down. It has to be flexible and fit the moment. I hope we're all gonna be pleasantly surprised with the unpredictablity. Let's all see how it works this first weekend. I'm personally happy that a bunch of badass TX HS players have earned some slots. Let's see how it goes. If it's a mess, call me out on Sunday.

Austin180 - agree on all counts.

There will be no "call-out" in your direction from this corner -- every indication, imo, is that Mack & Muschamp have done their best to get the Horns' top players (regardless of previous intercollegiate-football experience) involved with both our offense and our defense ... as the Horns' 2008 two-deep roster (imo) clearly illustrates.

With the obvious lack of experience that we have at several playing positions (on both sides of the line of scrimmage) going into the 2008 football season, it certainly makes sense to let the top players prove their point on the football field -- in live action -- rather than making an arbitrary & possibly premature personnel decision based solely on mixed results in our practice sessions.

This, imo, is one of the fundamental arguments for getting players such as John Chiles, Michael Huey, Malcolm Williams, Christian Scott, Chykie Brown and Blake Gideon on the football field (in prime time) vs. Florida Atlantic this Saturday. They may thrive under game pressure.

As we all know, some players are "gamers" (like Vince).

Let's see what we've got -- under fire -- in the 2008 Horns' season opener ... and then we can firm up the lineup for the Sooners as we close in on October 11.

Just so we do that, imo, "before" (not after) the RRS. When it comes to the Oklahoma game, the Horns' best approach always has been ...

... let your best players leave it all on the field, no excuses.

I totally agree. I trust the energy and speed of the badass HS kids on the D side. It's only the best TX HS football has to offer. And Will says the best ones get to play.
The O is a whole different deal. The reports are that the Will attitude has infected the O too. I hope we see it!

Austin180 - amen, again.

When the Horns play Florida Atlantic this Saturday, the real litmus test, imo, will be the point you mentioned -- i.e., whether our offense (particularly the Horns' running-game "scheme") reflects the same creative and aggressive coaching on the part of Mack & Greg (not to mention Major Applewhite, who ostensibly is our RBs coach) that we appear to be assuming will emanate automatically from Will Muschamp's coaching of our defense.

If the Horns display the same verve on offense that we anticipate seeing with our defense, then Texas may be the surprise team -- in a positive way -- in the Big-12 Conference (if not the nation) this year.

We'll find out soon enough -- not just in the season opener with Schnellenberger's crew, but more importantly when the issue is resolved vs. the Sooners in Dallas on October 11.
