We have an MBA summer intern @ work, and he's looking to get as much out of Austin in his remaining 7 weeks... My list is below, but I'm curious what you guys think are the best things to do in the Austin area?

My list in no particular order:
Salt Lick
The Capital
Float the River
Schlitterbaugh (same trip as floating the river)
Devil's Cove
Late night show at Drafthouse (some silly *** special event)
Get hammered on 6th (yes, it's juvenille, but you should be able to say you did it)
Barton Springs
Bats on Congress
Breakfast tacos at Juan in a Million

I hear they have live music there too. And this crazy theater where you can eat, drink, and watch a movie.

...you mentioned the dh, I suck.

oh yeah, i forgot Freebirds baby!

Freebirds????? Not an Austin company-- started in College Station, none the less! boo!

definitely NOT an Austin top 10.

I'd add shopping on SoCo

1. heckle californians
2. abuse twentysomethings from illinois
3. egg brand new 4000 sq ft mid-century modern homes in travis heights
4. smoke crack on red river and 7th (old school)
5. pick up prostitutes on SoCo (formerly South Congress)
6. get high on mt. bonnell
7. barton springs pool (see 1 & 2 above)
8. get high and drunk on the greenbelt
9. eat tex-mex at el azteca
10. go to Huts, then go back to wherever you came from

When did the first Freebirds open?
The first Freebirds opened in Santa Barbara , California , in 1987.

go to the FAQ section of the website.

and even better, they just opened a location in norman!

but don't let these two tidbits keep it from being an austin staple....

thank god someone mentioned that we don't use the god awful terms soco and sola. bull **** words.

i'd take off juan in a million and say the taco place across the street from st. julia farther on the east side.
eat at curras
poodle bar and other central north bars like the draught house
scholtz garden
def. hear a band on red river on a sun - thurs night.
do a bar hop on a bike but of all the east side bars, even the ghetto ones (its austin, they aint that bad); peacock, iron gate, rio rita, primos, longbranch, scoot, atx bar, rabbits, etc
break into (is it still there?) the foundation in front of the castle off 11th and lamar.
shoot fireworks off the cliffs next to 360 bridge at 3am.

1. hit any of the local water holes... barton springs, town lake, LT, LA, hamilton pool, deadman's hole, etc....

2. check out those bats

3. hit 6th

4. fine Tex-Mex at any of the local establishments

5. drafthouse

6. catch a show somewhere

7. i agree about bfast tacos at juan's

8. hike down the greenbelt

9. go atop the Tower

10. go back to where you came from.

these were not listed in any order. i could not even try to establish that.

i dont intend to but most of the bands/shows i see always end up on those days. and it avoids the douchebaggery of the weekend (well at least somewhat but definitely not completely). besides there are dollar specials all up and down sixth for chilling before or after.

Scholz Beer Garden

kick the Lone Star sign (oops)

migas at Taco Village

The Oasis (oops)

Barton Springs

Texas State History Museum /State Capitol building

The Blanton/Harry Ransom Center/Foucault Pendulum

Jog/walk/bike Town Lake

Mount Bonnell

one of the festivals

Take Goo's list, but you have to hit all of the waterholes and spend an entire weekend renting a boat with buddies, getting smashed and skiing on Lake Travis. I would also hit 4th and 6th Streets on different nights.

You also have to eat barbecue at Salt Lick, Rudy's, Iron Works, Pok-e-Jo's Smolkehouse, and I would say drive to Lockhart for Kreuz Market.

When does UT football practice begin? I would also see a practice before I leave (although I don't think the 7 weeks left overlaps with the start of UT practice).

imagine aggy's disappointment when they find out that the great gomersville staple, freebirds, was started out in hippytown, liberal, homosexual-luvin Santa Barbara, CA.

I smell a boycott.

You can never have a top 10 list for Austin since there is way too much to see and do.

Here are some others I personally like:

*Have the Bob Armstrong at Matt’s El Rancho with a margarita on the patio
*Amy’s Ice Cream
*Walk around campus/tower area
*Hit up an Austin pizza joint (Home Slice, Saccones, etc.)
*Have a Firemans #4 or any type of Texas beer at Doc’s on S. Congress
*Go to a concert at Nutty Brown Café
*Lake Travis
*Hula Hut
*4th Street

I’m a pretty good tour guide if he needs one….haha

here are the things we do on my semi annual trips there.

1. barton creek. if dry.... then
2. barton springs
3. hamilton pool
4. take daughter to hula hut (i can't stand the wait)
5. take boat tour to see bats (kids like the boat tour)
6. see the capitol. actually pretty interesting stuff in there.
7. amy's ice cream
8. homeslice, polvos, casino el camino
9. south congress drinking and shopping
10. mountain bike or jog the greenbelt

all the same ****, but you can do the barton creek, springs, and greenbelt over and over again. it is one of the only places i know that is used for both fitness/outdoor enthusiasts and complete drunkards (i can fall into both categories depending on the day) at the same time and can be shared in harmony.
