Tommie Harris gets paid

There's so much money to be made in professional football, it's really shocking the owners can't afford to build their own stadiums.

Building your own stadium would make sense for a very few teams:
Cowboys
Packers
Yankees
Red Sox
Knicks (without Isaiah)
Celtics

Otherwise... not a smart business move at all...

Stadiums cost about $500MM (+/- 20%) to build (or in the case of JerryWorld, double that). What owner would want to be on the hook for half a Bill for a stadium? They'd better be getting a SWEET tax break... like never paying local taxes again... because they are certainly going to add to the local economy more than they'd get back.

How'd we get from Tommie Harris with an $18MM guarantee to owners being able to pay for their own stadiums? Show me the logic behind that leap.

The food bought outside 8 home football games each year in places like Green Bay basically pays for those businesses' taxes for the year. So, yeah, it helps the local economy.

Now, it's debatable how much it would help in Arlington, TX, but that's a different story.

TH pretty much paved the way for Stoops in recruiting big time in Texas.
Probably the biggest recruit Stoops will ever sign in terms of paving the way for future generations.

Oh, we've historically done well in Texas & have for a long time but snagging TH was huge because it showed the other elite Texas preps that life goes on if you don't stay in state.
I know thaa every big recruit we landed in the 3 years he was here from Texas was paired up & wanted to be hosted by TH on their recruiting trip.
I know it helped in landing Granger, Kelly, Bomar, AD, ect...simply because he was a huge national recruit from Texas that crossed the Red.

Your right, TH should not have to struggle by on less than 18M just to release taxpayers from supporting a private enterprise. And if you don't agree with me I'll call you a name, that will teach you a lesson you liberal troll!

How the **** did this turn into a West Mall thread?

People who thought Tommie Harris was overrated never understood what a defensive tackle is supposed to do. He's as good as it gets there, at least until Amobi Okoye plays his first season past age 21...

I said the owners should pay for their own stadium since they are running a profit-making business. Once they have to pay for their own stadium, two things will likely happen:

1) They will scale back their grand plans since they're paying for them out of their pocket

2) They will pay the players less to cover their mortgage.

That's capitalism in its purest sense.

I only drew Tommie Harris into the scenario as an example to answer those who would raise the objection that the quality of play would suffer.

NFL owners cite stadiums as economic engines (8 home games drawing primarily people who already live in the city, whoo!). As it is, the owners usually own any land around the stadium that will be developed and benefit from additional tax breaks. Well, for a billion dollars, a city can build a series of parks and other amenities that would benefit all citizens while attracting additional development and corporate relocations.

While I'm not a football expert, I do know that a DT's worth is measured by more than stats. Having said that, TH is actually playing better in the pro's than he did at ou. He WAS overrated in college. I'll be the 1st to tell you that i didn't think he'd pan out as well as he has in the NFL. I guess the scouts that look at potential got it right on him. Of course those same scouts were wrong about grossman.
