Tomato types for different uses

OK, I'm going on a massive grocery store trip tomorrow for all my holiday cooking, and I can never keep straight which types of tomatoes to use in which situations:

- For serving fresh (e.g., in salads)
- For making homemade salsa
- For cooking in pasta sauces, soups, etc.

Can someone please remind me of which tomatoes to use in which situations?

Thanks in advance,

Just realized I don't cook much with intact tomatoes. Just linguistically, I'd guess Roma tomatoes are good for Italian things.

Brandywine is the best tasting tomato in the world. I grow them all year. Never serve a Brandywine with another tomato because the acid difference will give a bitter taste

I use canned whole peeled San Marzano plum tomatoes for any Italian dish I'm cooking. They can be expensive, but it's possible to find them for ~ $2.60 for a 28 oz can.
