Todays Win

From Nebraska's site:
Sat, Feb 06 Kansas * 1 at Lawrence, Kan. 5 p.m. 64 - 75 (L)

FWIW, losing by 9 to Kansas in Lawrence suggests they are plenty capable of playing very well on the road. Of course, their performance last week doesn't really have anything to do with what happened today. Nevertheless, I'd say it adds weight to the glimmer of hope theory.

Edit: Damn, I think I need to retake 2nd grade math - well, it was late and I'd had a few beers... Yeah, that's the excuse. But the overall point still stands.

Hamilton had a career high for passes in a game !!!
That was pretty encouraging.

I think there was a lot to be excited about. Nebraska lost by 19 to K State and 17 to Missouri but the other games have certainly been competitive. Beating that team by 40 points has to say something about how well you played, even if you figure NU didn't exactly bring their A game.

The question is, can they keep doing it? Being able to shoot from the perimeter obviously makes this a totally different team - and you can argue that an effort like today's would have beaten Kansas last week, but then KU played much better defense as well. So do we just shoot well against bad defenses? Or is it just inconsistency on our part?

I'm not sure I know the answer to that, but I think we'll know by tourney time.

Maybe the one game over many seasons in which I delighted in the movement of the ball, the quick passes, the tempo and acceleration and ATTITUDE, but I cannot grasp how much that had to do with Nebraska's defense, or lack thereof.

I'm happy with the starting lineup, and perhaps -- after all, unbeknownst to one such as me -- it really did take 25 games for the freshmen players to fully grasp how to play together and individually, in every circumstance on the floor over the full span of a game. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

There was real interesting things going on in this gme.

I enjoyed seeing Brown being the primary ball handler more. I think he is the best point guard on the team and he needs to continue to get minutes there.

Hamilton was working on distributing the ball and this created open shots for his teammates, especially Bradley. Great job. If he can continue to do this then he cracks the starting line-up soon. Either way I enjoy seeing him and Johnson together when they sun for James and Pittman, or Pittman and Balbay depending on what Barnes wants to do.

I like seeing Barnes inserting 2 players like this at the same time, vs. just inserting a new guy every minutes and not having any consistency on the floor.

I am still not sold on Lucas. I don't think he deserves 20 minutes yet but being such a blow out it was good to give him minutes in garbage time to develop.

James looked great in short minutes and it was good to give him a bit of a rest.

Going forward I like the lineup of:
Pittman
James
Brown
Bradley
Balbay or Hamilton

Johnson is a great 6th coming off the bench. I enjoy seeing him sub with Johnson to bring in 2 guys off the bench at the same time. If they sub for Balbay and Pittman, then this will require James and Brown to play about 30 minutes a night. These 2 guys need to be on the floor the majority of the game.

Prodigal: The game at Missouri was a one-pointer inside 12 minutes. Missouri closed them out 25-9. I am not going to tell you that Nebraska is a good team, but only one other team has beaten them by more than 20 (BYU by 22).

They just got steamrolled today.

It is hard to find fault in a 40-point win, so I won't try. But it is still just 1 win and probably the easiest Conference game on our schedule. If we continue to play like that, we can win the rest of our games and make a run at a much higher seed. I don't see the committee putting us in the Houston Regional with less than a 2-seed, though.

A lot of positives to take away from the game:
-- Bradley 9/12 from the field (6/7 from 3)
-- Hamilton dishing the ball and shooting jumpers instead of runners
-- 73% from the FT line
-- James & Johnson equally combining for 26 pts and 18 boards
-- Killer instinct. Didn't give Nebraska a chance to get back into the game and built on a 26-point halftime lead.

Good win.
