Today has been pretty boring...

I just got back from the D.C. pod games. The Georgia-Xavier game was pretty exciting until the last minute or so. The Baylor game ... not so much.

Worst first half of an opening day that I can remember. Assuming Stanford continues to roll, 7 of the 8 games decided by double digits.

Kent. St. really laid an egg. Xavier game was very good. Gaines is very good player. Marquette game was good. Tonite should be very nice.

Winthrop and Belmont are on the Upset Watch, maybe they can salvage this day.

Plus, Gus Johnson is calling the Winthrop-WSU game, so it'd be great if that one comes down to the wire. Nobody beats the Gus.

Belmont had the Dukies but folded down the stretch.(last 30 secs were brutal for Belmont)

The day did seem to have a strange feel to it. As if none of the match-ups made much sense. Belmont should have stolen that game from Duke to give some shocker-reality to the day.

Then a team scores 29 against "anybody." What kind of tournament invitation is that? If you're that incapable why even be there? I think any team at the bottom of the Big 12 could have played UCLA better than that.

Just as it is a huge game of odds to fill in a bracket, why wouldn't it be the same for the Committee to create an exciting and competitively interesting bracket to begin with?

It's not the 64 teams you select... it's where you seed them and play them, region-to-region and up and down the seeding numbers.

So far, it has a top-heavy feel to it. And way down on the excitement meter. Glad I did not pony up for the DirecTV package.

Also.. CBS. For the final minute of the Duke-Belmont game, they cut to it and back about 10 times (from the A&M game). Either cut and stay or leave it alone. Or make some other decision in the booth than the one I saw.

Yeh it sucks for me with Time Warner. Just get the 1 game at a time on CBS and they cut back and forth it is so annoying.

Duke game was very close and good to the buzzer. At least what I got to see of it.

Some good matchups already set though after this "boring" 1st day:

5 Michigan St. vs. 4 Pittsburgh....winner of this game could be playing Texas in round of 8

7 West Virginia vs. 2 Duke...after Duke's play in round 1 West Virginia could pull the slight upset here.

6 Kansas St. vs. 3 Wisconsin

5 Notre Dame vs. 4 Washington St....could go either way but if Notre Dame wins I have them picked to upset North Carolina in sweet 16.

Yeah......I usually don't agree with anything Bob Knight has to say, but he is right when he says the 1st round can usually be won on talent alone. And that was eveident in many games. The 2nd round games this weekend should be terrific.
