To all you conference re-alignment experts...

...do you really think that any conference is going to expand solely by pulling in only top-10-ranked teams?

How quickly we forget the ebb and flow of teams in and out of the top ranks in football. And equally, how quickly we forget it's not just fooball - as much as many of you would have us believe.

Media markets are a factor, money is a factor, AAU status is a factor, and on an on.

Give it some time. Let the Big XII grow as a conference, and let it grow its own crop of top-tier programs. It can happen.

i'm older than a lot of you but the nostalgia side of me says bring back the old SWC, bring back SMU and UH and add BYU to make 12. BYU brings in a huge market out West, they have the biggest fan base, TV wise, West of Denver. I've also heard Tulane metioned to give the Big 12 a market in Louisiana. Tulane really is terrible but admission to the big 12 would build up their program. We could go superconference first and add Tulane, Boise St., West Virginia and Louisville. We don't need missouri's input either right now since they are not voting due to their desire to leave. What would be great is if we could add and go to 13 teams, drop Missouri by a unanimous vote and leave them without a conference. We would then be cancer free as a conference and could start over

I'm with general35; and I may even be older than he is. And given a game in NOLA every other year vs. B/CS - really? Is there a choice?

Here are the facts:

Schools that have left or will soon leave:

Nebraksa -- One of the 10 best programs of all time. Several Heismans and MNCs. National respect galore. Sells out 85,000 stadium and travels as good as anybody.

aTm -- 40,000 enrollment. Massive alumni and fan base. Sells out a 90,000 seat stadium. Closest thing to a flagship school behind UT in the 2nd most populous state in the country. AAU member.

CU -- Large enrollement and fan base. Flagship school for a populous state with a Top 10 metro area 30 miles south. Has won MNCs and Heismans. AAU member.

Missou -- Flagship school in a populous state, with two large metro areas on either side (KC and St. Louis). Also sells out a large stadium. Also an AAU member.

Schools that are rumored to be potential replacements:

TCU -- Mid-major. Small private school with a fan base that is limited to its own graduates. Plays in a stadium the size of Westlake High School. Averages 30,000 fans at home games. Was terrible in football for 40 years until the last several years, when they only played 1-2 BCS teams per year. 98% of the people in its home state are fans of UT, aTm, or someone else.

BYU -- Mid-major. Private school. Pretty decent following in Utah and surrounding areas. Probably best option out there, but every BCS commish would take the four schools that have left Big 12 over them.

Tulane -- Mid-Major. Small private school that has never been good in football. Averages 18,000 home fans. 98% of people in its home state are fans of LSU.

Air Force -- Mid-Major. Service Academy. Prestigious academically but adds nothing in terms of ratings due to small fan/alumni base and puny home crowds. Would class up the joint a bit.

UH -- Mid-Major. Known as "Cougar High" for a reason. Commuter school ful of 30 year old part-time secretaries and retail salespeople. Stadium should be condemned, and averages less than 20,000 fans. No follwoing even in its home town.

Conclusion: when you are replacing the schools on the first list with the schools on the second list, you are losing. We better make a ton of money off of the LHN because the "Big 12" TV contract is about to be re-negotiated way down.

As long as AAU membership is an evaluation tool, let's not 'conveniently overlook' that Nebraska was just dropped from the AAU, and that Tulane is a member.

Just saying.

And let's not start quoting opinions as 'the facts', unless you're prepared to show me the written preferences for 'every BCS commish', the statistical data on 98% of the fans in LA being for LSU, and the projected attendance for the updated Amon Carter Stadium being what historical attendance has been.

Here is a picture of a Tulane home game in the Superdome taken by a smartass LSU friend of mine that is now mocking me for the Big 12's replacements (Tulane is rumored to be on the "to be offered" list). As you will note, the score is 24-21 Tulane, and the other team has the ball on about the 5 yard line with 2 minutes left. There appear to be about 20 fans in the stadium (I'm sure there are a few hundred more on the "home" sideline, but this is pretty bad).

At any rate, this is where our soon-to-be-former AQ conference is apparently headed, Awesome.

Agree that Zona doesn't speak for the Big12, commish or otherwise. There are many who would rather have TCU than the Ags in the conference. And that's even more true in the case of BYU. I'm happy with letting MU go and bringing the total back to 12 with TCU, BYU and whoever else is decided upon. Yes, NU was a top program but I wasn't sorry to see them go, for many reasons. Whether or not the Big12 will be stronger, or as strong post the realignment is beside the point IMO; it will still be a strong league, albeit different. Staying put and replacing those who've left is still a much better option than joining the PAC or B1G; hopefully all of that silliness is now a thing of the past.

Obviously the Tulane fans left early since they had such a convincing lead.

Perhaps they are just a quirky fan base and dont stick around for the end of their games
