Players don't usually like the franchise tag since its means zip in a signing bonus.

I'm sure the Titans will negotiate in good faith

but the franchise tag and long term deals have nothing to do with each other.

It guarantees Albert a nice annual salary for next year. I think the average of the top 3 players at his position. But its a one year deal without a signing bonus.

If the Titans were confident they could sign Albert, then why drop that tag on him. Obviously they are just ensuring they have him next year regardless if they can work out a deal.

If the Titans sign him to a long-term deal, that deal with supercede the terms of the franchise tag. The reason for doing this is to guarantee that you can extend the time period in which no team can offer him anything from this coming Thursday until this time next year. Players only dislike this when the tag isn't followed up by a long-term deal...
