is a great movie and deserved Best Picture that year. Yes, I am straight and will not turn in my man card. F the haters.

Feels good getting that monkey off your back, eh?

I probably would have like it better, if a friend of mine hadn't spoiled it for me before I got a chance to see it.

He told me the ship sank.

It confused me a bit. Did it sink because it hit in iceberg, or did the hull crack under the weight of Kate Winslet.

maybe not the BEST picture of the year but still a damn good one.

Titanic was a great pic, you can look at our financials for that year and SEE without a doubt when TiTanic hit the theaters. Bookings and revenue went through the roof when that thing came out.

I did not like it.

It was 90% great, but the 10% that sucked just sucked too much.

An easy example: why did two guys chase each other around the boat shooting guns at each other? They were on a sinking ship!

At its core, it was a great movie, but it just couldn't resist the temptation to Hollywood-mainstream-movie itself up.

The two best scenes were the old couple climbing into bed and the band strking up another tune. Those moments were powerful. Chasing each other around with guns is the equivelant of a car chase scene - it adds nothing dramatically and it is meant to entertain the unintelligent masses.

I also found the love scene to add no value to the movie except to check the box on the checklist of "what are thing Hollywoody things we need to add to this movie to sell tickets."

Once the ship hits the iceberg, it gets good. One of the things Cameron gets right is returning to characters after they've made their noble decisions.

We return to the captain in the wheel room to see the fearful inrush of water. We return to the rich men with their cognac as the water rises and the real fear of drowning overcomes their calm. In previous versions, we don't see those moments when the implications of their courage or nobility became coldly real.

I'm going to get off my high horse about the idea of a monolithic Hollywood after this last observation. "Hollywood" didn't decide to add the lame love story. James Cameron had had such success with the Terminator movies, Aliens et al, that he had creative control of the film. There are plenty of cases where studio executives dumb down or dilute plots, Titanic is not one of those cases.

I don't agree with the op that it is a great movie, but it is a good one IMHO. If I happen upon it on cable after they've hit the iceberg, I usually watch for at least a little while. The shouting of "Rose!" does get tedious, however.

I agree with the post Titanic was the best movie that year. LA Confidential was a crapfest and deserved the gold raspberry that year.

There's a damn good reason Titanic was nominated for 14 awards and won 11. I can understand if people thought another movie deserved best picture but to actually hate Titanic is mind boggling.

My friend's dad took us to see that movie when we were in middle school. The only reason I was excited to see it was because of all the reports of there being a nudey scene in it. I don't remember how it ended, but I remember when the ship hit the iceberg it was pretty exciting from their to the end.

Ok, one of the things I never really "got" was whether DiCaprio's character caused the sinking. Didn't he distract the lookout with his goofy "I'm king of the wooooorrrrrrllllllddddd" stunt just before they hit the iceberg?

I'm guessing that is not historically accurate.

I must admit, I really like Titanic also. I thought it was really good when it came out while I was 10 years old and I still like to watch it from time to time.

But have you guys seen the preview for the sequel? Link

why is there a thread about Titanic? There already is a thread about the worst movies ever made. Hornfans should merge these threads.
I don't think I have seen a movie with more poorly written dialogue than Titanic. The dialogue on Saved by the Bell is refreshing in comparison.

White people...always running to jump on some ********.
Did you go see that long, dry movie?
I kept saying, everyone knows what's gonna happen...god dammit bring on the water! Let's drown these mother *******, what are we sitting in here 3 hours for? Worried about this little punk *** boy in jail, drown his punk ***.

Good Will Hunting was the best movie that year but Titanic was excellent and has actually ended up being quite underrated despite being the highest grossing movie of all time.
