Tips on working with a general contractor?

I am about to embark on a kitchen remodel and will be working with a general contractor. First time doing this. Anyone have pearls of wisdom from past experience that will help ensure the job gets done right and within budget?

I know not to pay more than 20% at front end of job, rest at completion. I know to make sure the contract spells out explicitly what is to be done at what price, and to have it reviewed by my attorney. What else?

where are you located and who are you having do it? i'm having someone come to my house on monday to talk about a bathroom remodel and kitchen remodel. i'm scared...

Gets some kind of guarantee/warranty on their work in the contract. Make sure you are both vigilant at putting revisions/changes/additions/subtractions to the contract in writing AS YOU GO.

Don't get too attached because chances are you will hate his guts before it's all over.

Get it included in the contract that you will get a complete builders & suppliers release of lien upon completion when you've paid the bill in full. This should be notarized.

If he gives you one lien from him that says he has been satisfied for all payments, you need to make sure this includes for parts as well.
