Timing belt question

I just rolled 90K on my 2005 Mazda 3. I am about to give it to my wife (who drives maybe 50 miles a week at most). I've had the brakes done, kept up with regular maintenance, etc., but I've always heard you should have the timing belt replaced around the 90-100K mark as a preventative measure.

Is that true? I hate to drop money on it if it doesn't need to be done.

Yes, it's true. Check your Maintenance Manual for the recommended mileage for that engine.

After some google research I found out the Mazda3 uses a chain, not a belt. So it should outlast the engine.

2004 Mazda3 owner here. I have 97K on mine and looked into this issue recently.

This vehicle does use a chain and will not need to be replaced anytime soon.
